Default Replace convertible top

I have a 2000 C4 Cab with a top starting to show some wear. This top has a soft (plastic) rear window. In 2001 or 2002 Porsche went to a glass rear window. I am wondering if when replacing the top/canvas can the newer version with the glass window be used? Are the frames the same? Controls? etc. etc. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I am having my top done now and was told the 02 top can not be used on the early cars as the boot where top goes is not the same and the plastic window must fold.

99-01 Plastic window
02+ glass

Cannot use the glass in a pre 02 car. An aftermarket company has created a new top for the 986 line but nothing aftermarket as of yet for a glass top application for 99-01 tops.

Wink

At least the 'plastic' rear window on pre-2002 cars is bigger than the 'glass' rear window on newer cars.

I don't know, just trying to find a positive here for you.

FYI, I have a 2000 996.

Just replaced mine. Found a lot of conflicting info about swapping top with mechanism. Ended up with plasic sew in (b/c I wanted tint) and am very happy with it.

Nick,

Which company did you get the sew in from? My plastic just seperated from the canvas pretty bad...both sides & the entire bottom have come free.

The entire zipper section has come free with the plastic.

My canvas is in excellent shape...is it possible to just get the liner with the window and have it stitched in?

Went with the GAHH top, but bought from Cabrioworld. They were actually cheaper. German canvas, black tinted rear window (equivalent to about 30% tint). Excellent quality. I also bought their headliner with it (top is $100 less w/o) just to ensure the fit. I'm very happy with the quality and the look. Don't know if they sell the window without the liner, but someone may be able to do it for you. I really wanted the tint done b/c I wanted to tint the rest of the car so it was a no-brainer for me. Happy to answer any questions that you've got- just let me know.
