Thumbs down 996 Gearbox - replace not rebuild!

Hi

Just dropped in from the 944/951 board as one of our club members was telling us about his problems with his 996 gearbox. Apparently it's had a whine since new and while under warranty the dealer said that it was "within acceptable limits...etc". Once out of warranty, he's been advised by the same service people that the gearbox needs to be replaced - there is no rebuild option as the manufacturing "efficiencies" used in 996 production meant that no internal parts for tis model are available, and that the only fix for a dud gearbox is to replace the whole thing? Is that the true situation as experienced by you other Rennlisters? Seems very disappointing to me if it's true....

You cannot buy internal parts for the 996 or the Boxster S from Porsche. Jeff

Are they available from other sources? I'm sure you must be able to take the thing apart, seems ludicrous to me not to have this option.

Seems silly indeed. I imagine it is the same as the engine. Porsche would rather sell you a new/remanufactured unit from the factory rather than let dealerships do the work.

Seems funny that it was acceptable under warranty but now they want to replace it. I think I would be asking for some assistance from the dealer.

If you have a paper trail from the dealer (work orders with instructions or comments about the trnamsission problem) then this should be covered under warranty. Contact Porsche Customer Relations.

Most manufacturers do not expect their dealers to repair engines or tranmissions under warranty.
The liability aspect as well a control issues are the main reason.

I didn't want to complicate things at the beginning with my original post, but the good news (as of last week) is that the 996 owner in question has had his gearbox replaced under warranty - yes it's good sense to have a record made of your complaint during the warranty period, and to be tenacious when things go awry afterwards......but this non-repair policy with 996 boxes is going to cause lots of problems for 2nd, 3rd etc owners down the track. Apparently 996 turbos and GT3's have rebuildable boxes (I think based on the 993 box).
