Question MY02+ 3.6L ECU Chip/Programming

Do any of the aftermarket suppliers have something for the MY02+ cars yet in terms of piggyback chips or reprogramming existing ECU's? I know that there are several options to go with for the 3.4L, but it seems that when I look through ads for these they don't cover the newer 996's. Is that due to the encryption Porsche used (I think I read that somewhere) or something else?

If programming is available, is there a recommended dyno proven supplier?

Take a look at <a href="http://www.fabspeed.com" target="_blank">www.fabspeed.com</a> or if out on the west coast <a href="http://www.evoms.com" target="_blank">www.evoms.com</a>

Looking at their websites Fabspeed doesn't have anything for MY02+ 3.6L engines. Evoms lists a part # but doesn't have any specs, furthermore their dyno chart for a 2000 996 3.4L isn't right because it shows rear wheel HP at almost 450!!! I don't know if that was a later turbo engine or some other 3.4L that had more done than just the GAIC computer tuning. As I thought, it doesn't seem that anyone has a proven 3.6 ECU tuning program yet for MY02+ cars.

If that's the case then it looks like headers and intake are the way to go initially and combined might be good for 15-20hp gain, or about what the X51 package would get you but for a lot lot less.

Ghost Rider:

As of this moment, the 3.6 litre 996 chip reprogramming on USA-based OBD-II cars is a work-in-progress.

The truth is that Porsche did a better job on the engine mapping and left far less on the table for folks like us to take advantage of. Thus far, the gains from normal chip reprogramming has been too small to offer anything that would be cost effective.

The R&D is ongoing and hopefully soon, we'll have something worthwhile to offer.

Steve,

Thanks for the info, much appreciated!

Would you concur then that for the time being headers, sport mufflers and a different intake are about the only way to squeeze a little more HP/torque out of the car then?

In your opinion, where would you start first?

TIA!

GH:

I'd do sport mufflers and MAYBE a different intake. IMHO, the jury is still out on that one. Porsche did a goob here and any gains are very modest.

The last time I ran a chipped 996 with headers (3.4) on a dyno, I observed the A/F get quite lean on top that suggests some good gains might be had with some further chip tuning. The low and mid-range did suffer though.

Unless one could do some further work here, I'll not suggest headers quite yet.

Hey Steve what happened to that thread about the 3.4l dyno tuning you did and can I expect the same gains or more out of my 99 3.4l as that egas 2k with the giac tweaking?
