Do any of you Cabrio folks leave your top down when parked? I notice alot of cabrio's all types of cars leaving their tops down while in stores. I'd like to but I'm a bit paranoid about doing it.
Im in your neck of the world WashDC, and I do it as much as I can. At night if I am going to a movie or something I will put it up but in the broad daylight I keep it down.
I do if I'm only going to be gone for a short time and I always make sure my glove box and center box are locked. However, I do worry about someone ripping off my Sirius receiver display. I do see Boxters all the time in parking lots with the tops down.
I used to do it all the time when I had a BMW Roadster. I figured the top offered no security because people will just cut through it if they wanted to get into your car. No Pampers incidents for me, the only problem I had was dust and leaves collecting on the dash and other interior bits.
I always close the top. It is so easy to do I just hit the SmartTop button as I arrive in the parking lot and by the time its stopped the top is up. Not just for security (an open car is an invitation), but like Dan, for dust and stuff. Also I have tinted windows and it keeps the heat down a little.
Just as wross said. CLose it. Takes all of 15 secs when you are parked or if you have the smarttop module you can have it closed by the time you pull into your spot.
Closing that top is just a small insurance policy against vandals. Close it.
My .02cents is that I also live in the DC Metro (NoVA), the only time I leave the top down is when I'm at my local neighborhood stores running in to grab and/or pay for something quickly during the day. Smart top takes 15-20 seconds and is an insurance policy with convenience as I park.
I just installed my SmartTOP last night. I don't think I'll leave the top open anymore except when I am parked in my garage.
The SmartTOP programming is just common sense. It's too bad there are people out there without common sense who probably filed law suits against Porsche, so I had to pay $279 for what should be standard on this vehicle.

I only leave it open when going into a store for a 10 min run. The parking lot has to be with high traffic or else I'd close it.
Always raise my glass to avoid anyone reaching in. When parking for longer than a quick in&out, I close the top. Also never leave anything in the car when top is down. At least llock it in glove box or trunk. Closing the top will also cut down on sun damage to interior.
