I would tend to agree. An "indicated" 80mph in 6th is about 3000 rpm. The published top speed of 174mph in 6th would arrive at ~6525 rpm, well short of redline.

When you let off the gas at high rpm the fuel injection completely cuts off until the rpm dropps below about 1400. The rpm was probably dropping so fast that the fuel injection did not come on in time to keep it from dying. This is more of a problem with a lightweight flywheel.

I was doing 275 km/h a few weeks ago in Germany in my 2000 C4 Cab. Tiptronic. No problems at all. No loud wind noice from the roof, no shaking. Just simple pleasure A little sweatty afterwards though
Too much traffic to get all the way to 280-285 Km/h but there was still some left in it. I think the rev was on approx. 6800 but not sure.

275? My Lord, that is fast. You have brass ones my friend. I can't imagine drving my 996 at 171mph (275km) at anytime, not even on the track where that speed should be. Can't even imagine the carnage that would ensue if a critter shot across the road and disrupted your balance.

But then again, I have had mine to 145mph (235km) and that was plenty for me. Not sure how much more differnt it would feel if I had it 25-30 mph faster.

For U.S. citizens driving in Europe (or at least for me), the km/h speedos always made it seem like you were driving ultra fast! I could never make the conversion in my mind on a real time basis so I always felt like I was breaking land speed records until I was passed by a yugo or renault

I did hit 170 mph several times when the car was a few hundred miles over 2K. Haven't done it since. Here's how I summarize the experience.

up 10 140 mph, pure exhilaration
140 - 150 mph, living on the edge
150 - 160 mph, beginning to doubt my sanity
160 - 170 mph. visions of my now fatherless children wearing tattered clothes.

Car did just fine. Steady as if it was doing 55 mph. But, in a country where the highest legal speed is 70 mph, there is this nagging voice saying "You're insane", getting progressively louder the farther away from that limit you go on the street. Voice is strangely absent on the track, though .

Weeee - last night I drove home at 2 am from a poker night with the buddies.

On my way home, there is a 4-5 mile long tunnel - 100% straight, good lighting conditions and not a single possible place for police to laser me.

Wrooooooom wrooooooom

With this thread in mind, I just had to try.

Up to 200 km/h it feels as if you drive the regular 100. Then it starts. The lines on the road start to fly awefully fast past you. Up to 250 km/h you feel that you are still in control.

But between 250 and 270 (where I stopped) you really doubt your sanity. The stripes on the road seem like a continious line and you dont dare to fart - fearing that you cant hold the car straight and the slightest turn on the wheel will crash you into the concrete walls.

What a thrill and the adrenaline rush afterwards was awesome.

I couldnt do the last 15 km/h to reach max speed. End of tunnel and it was going up towards a large bridge with turns.

Been there, done that now. Not going to try it again for a while.

But if you have the ***** and a long straight road devoid of any obstacles, then its a fantastic (and scary) feeling.

But it doesnt take much more than a freaking rabbit on the road, and you are toast. Beware - and I would never ever try this on a road where someone stupid could jump in front of you, or grandpa in his pickuptruck switches lanes without looking back.
