Default 996 Engine Reliability Article in "Excellence Magazine"

Interesting article on page 165 of the October 2005 issue of Excellence Magazine that discusses the 996's engine reliability vs. an air cooled 911 engine. The article states that a 996 engine should be durable enough to last over 200k miles, and provides rare illustrations of a dissassembled 996 engine. Wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the article. Thanks.

Thanks Salomon. I haven't read it yet, but I can say finally a breath of fresh air to our beloved 996's!

Very interesting article, I wonder when porsche will release parts to rebuild them yourself, although alot of the parts can be obtained through aftermarket custom racing outfits I would imagine.

Went to Borders books yesterday expecting to buy the new issue, but to no avail. Disappointed.

You need to start a subscription, it's the best Porsche mag going. That was an interesting article, the 3.4 engine looked great after 100K+ miles.

Well, it doesn't surprise me at all that these engines are good for 200k. The only problem I have heard of is the RMS thing, which is really kind of a superficial issue.

You're right Doug. Time to open the wallet again for the Porsche Excellence subscription! I'll end up buying from the newstand every month anyways. I love these emoticons!

The rms thing is as big a deal as you want to make it, to paraphrase killgrt. These are great engines, excellent hp/l, nearly indestructable and in my opinion BETTER than a na 993 engine.

Since I am putting on almost 2k miles a month since I bought mine in June, I have a feeling that I will be a candidate for the next longevity article! A little scarey but worth it every mile.

Who's got the highest miles per year? Riad's down with 16,200/yr. At this rate, I'm probably looking at 15,000/yr.

my 3.4 liter engine had top-end wear (valve train, etc.) at ~90k miles, but it still pulled hard and didn't burn a lot of oil. the engine will last 200k miles, but it will be down on power - significantly so. i haven't seen the article but my interest is piqued now...
