Ordered mine late '99, picked it up on my Bday in Dec '99. Although not driven as often as most, when I do drive it, I do drive it hard.

37K miles, issues:
- broken gear shift linkage, twice (?!?)
- coolant bottle cracked
- tires (rears at least) every 4 - 5K miles (YES, I do have the car aligned!)
- broken ignition
- cab top squeaks

Despite these issues, it pulls hard and has not burned a drop of oil (nor leaked) so I think my engine is a keeper.

Just another data point...

The article made it sound like the 996 engine blocks are better and stronger than the 964 cases (turbo, GT3) if you are lucky enough to get one without RMS. That can't be true, can it? Don't flame me yet because i have a 996 C2 myself and it's been perfect on the road, track and autox. But i have been considering getting a 996 GT3 solely for the track and its "superior" 964 engine, and this article set me thinking maybe i should wait for the 997 GT3 instead if it is indeed true that these new engines will last longer than the older crankcase design if Porsche is able to sort out the early gremlins. If Porsche sticks with the 964 case for 997 GT3, the choice would be obvious, but if the 997 GT3 uses the new crankcase design but dry sump, i be first in line for one...

I avg 30,000 Km/year (approx 18.4 M/year) despite having the car stored from mid december to early april...given that I might slap on winter tire this year and drive yet more I hope (make that pray) that the engine can last.

It's really hard for me to keep the miles down. Besides my daily grind to and from work, I look for any opportunity to take the car out to let it stretch its legs. Wife needs milk? Time to take the P-car to the grocery store. Not the one around the corner, but the one on the other side of our neighborhood. Just think, I don't even have PSE, YET. This is going to get ugly.

Now with gas prices it gives me good reason to take the 6 cylinder p car everyday instead of the SUV.

Bought mine last November with 39k miles, just the other day we hit the big 60K. The car is humming and "bumping" along just fine. Its all about maintenence and actually driving the car.
