Does anyone have any experience dealing with a George Allan who is selling CD-based manuals for cars? He has a set for the 996 which he describes as such:
Hi David
I have the complete 996 shop manual which covers all body and engine variants except the Turbo and GT2
I also have available the OBD II manual and the Technical Service Bulletins (TSB's).
The Porsche electronic parts catalog, PET-6, is included with the shop manual.
I am attaching a small sample of the manual so you can see what it looks like.
The manual is fully bookmarked and linked for easy navigation to any page you wish to view.
You can also print any and all pages for easy use in the shop.
Let me know what you like.
He is asking about $140 for the set. Has any one else used this manual set? Is is comprehensive? Is it from the set that the dealers use to service the cars? He says it has all the DME diagnosis stuff and torque specifications, etc.
Just wanted to know if it was worth spending the money.
The PET catalog you can get for $12, the TSBs for free at places like Renntech.org if you are a contributing member of their website but the 996 shop manual I have no idea what to say about cost since I got it from a fellow enthusiast here on the boards gratis. (I have a copy on CD for the 996 in pdf form).
the pdf manuals are copies of the porsche ones (and not exactly legal) i believe the paper manuals from porsche are in the 1000.00+ range now.
Of course they aren't legal. But I have no intention of making money on them. My point of posting here was to illustrate (in no obvious way) that if he is getting ALL of that stuff for $140 he is being ripped off and in an illegal way.
not arguing with you on that - there are other cheaper (or free) sources for the PET and TSB's as you pointed out
I would just purchase the manuals if anything
Good point Rob......as for the manuals, I never set out to find them or better yet find them for free. I was just offered them gratis and accepted them. Honestly, I haven't even used them since this site (and Renntech.org) has been so valuable in all my maintenence and upkeep!
i agree There are a ton of procedures which require the system tester 2 to complete (or unhook the batter and pray method) but for a lot of DYI fixes they are invaluable. (I got my set for free as well)

I also had the impression that it was a lot of money for what, inevitably, must have been a pirated copy of the Porsche manuals. I didn't get an answer to my question about what the source of the service manuals was, so I assumed the worst. Obviously, I declined to purchase them.
Perhaps the best way to prevent people from illegally profiting from these CD's is for one of the owners of a free set to distribute them at no charge That will teach them! PS-I'm first in line.
This outfit (be sure to correct the spelling in the link if you go to look) stiffed me. They sent a disk with corrupted files, some of which were unrecoverable. A plea from me elicited only "sorry, that's the way our original is".
No help. No refund. No further responses to my emails.
I'm glad I bought my set of service manuals several years ago before the price went up. I think I paid $250 with my PCA discount. It is easily one of the best "upgrades"for my garage since I do a lot work myself. I would try and find a set of originals on ebay or somewhere.

Prime example of, "you get what you pay for".
It works perfect for me and other rennlisters. Also got the PET disc and it works great too...
Sorry about the spelling though www.workshopmanuals.co.uk
