Only 10-15k more for the newer porsche ????? there is no question, you should go with the 997. The whole chassis is improved, porsche's always get better, and only 10-15 k less for an older model is not a good incentive, so I'll get the 997. You should ofcourse test drive them both.
The 996's have been dropping pretty good and likely to accelerate. A longer warranty is worth it's weight in gold too! Kinda a "catch 22". You could get a good deal on a 996, but does the accelerated depreciation make up for it? FWIW
I could have gotten a base 997 with 19s for just a few $K more than my CPO'd 40th Anniversary. I chose the faster, more extensively optioned car (996 with X51), which has already taken its big initial depreciation hit, and with the CPO warranty is actually covered longer than a new car. To each his own.
After 2 days of high-performance driving at PDE, and almost a year since I bought my 40th Anniversary, I can honestly say that the 40th is perched above the base 997 and just below the 997S.
Don't get me wrong I'm not saying the base 997 is trash, it is a wonderful vehicle, and well worth it. But the 40th Anniversary does have an edge with the X51 package (at least from the track perspective). In terms of performance, the 997S is certainly above the 40th, no question.
What is interesting is the value the 40th brings to the picture. When I bought my 40th, the price was essentially the same as a base 997 with a few options. I wasn't sold with the 997 front design, and the beautiful all leather interior and unique features of the 40th made my decision easier. I have no regrets.
Personally I think the 40th rocks
Their is no way in hell I would sell my 40th and take a huge depreciation hit to buy a 997S or no "S".....but if I could afford the upcomming 997 Turbo S that would be different......
I agree that the 40th could be better than the base 997, I think I still will choose the 996 40th or the gt3 over the 997C2, But I love my C4S too muchy that I don't have to make that decision, and I assumed the initial question was for 996c2 vs 997c2.
I love the 40th...but dont think its faster even with X51...Heavier and not as much low end torqu as 997....
Unless I'm mistaken, Porsche's performance figures for the 997 and the 2004 Carrera are the same - the 997 got 5 more HP (and no more torque) but gained weight over the 996.
The 40th had better performance figures than the regular 996 so I don't see how it would be slower than the 997, particularly a 997 without PASM.
