Default What is a clutch on a 996 C2 supposed 2 be like?

I drove a turbo yesterday and the clutch was light as a feather (same as a civic, rx8, mazda 3 etc etc...).

on my car the clutch was very heavy since the day i bough it, comparativly speaking.

i've been told that it could be because there was an aftermarket clutch kit installed, or because the clutch is damaged...which it isn't...its slipping a bit and has that improperly lubricated spring that there was a TSB for...but its in good shape overall.

A new Porsche clutch should be extremely easy to depress. As the clutch wears, the pressure necessary to push the pedal will increase.

1999, Can that statement be made for all Porsches? I don't think I've had one that I would call easy to depress compared to other cars. With the exception of the 70s vintage V8s I drove as a teenager, all of my P-cars clutchs' have been a little stiif, at least inasmuch as hold them on the florr when stopped, not necessarily pushing them in.

hmm.. i think the only way to settle this is fr me 2 go down to a dealer and hop in one and give the clutch a shove.

The hydraulics mask much of the pressure needed to engage the clutch. A new clutch is as easy to engage as a Honda Civic. As water accumulates in the hydraulic lines and/or the disc wears, the pedal will required more leg to depress, but will only be noticed if you're looking for it.

I have a new clutch relatively speaking and it is very hard to push in. However it releases very nice and low given the impression that it isn't a wear issue, any ideas? I have had the clutch slave replaced before.

Hydraulics? Might be air in the line.

My brother has a Turbo and the clutch is much lighter then the NA 996. It's normal. The exhaust also sounds like a vacuum cleaner on the Turbo.

Default Clutch wear: seems to engage closer to "top"

Glad someone started this thread -- I have a similar question. The various 996's I drove prior to buying my '02 seemed to have clutches with similar feels (relatively easy to depress, middle engagement). I have 32K miles (I've been driving it too much, I think :-) and the clutch seems to engage a bit higher (e.g. nearer the "out" position for the clutch). Is this due to wear? If it is near "top" is it near wearing out completely?

More thoughts appreciated -- I know it is tough to describe this in writing...

Led, my '04 engages very high as well. Quite an adjustment coming from the M3, which is on the low end of engagement range. Dealer says this is characteristic of 996.

Same here. Engages close to the bottom of the range. Perfect setting.

Mine (99 C2) engages at the bottom too. My C2 in terms of stifness is between the TT and the GT3. You might want to drive a GT3 and compare.

ON THE N/A CARS THERE IS A SPRING ASSIST ON THE PEDAL(NOT VERY MUCH ASSIST,BUT SOME).THE TURBO CARS HAVE HYDRAULIC ASSIST VIA THE P/S SYSTEM AT THE SLAVE CYLINDER.IF YOU EVER LOSE ALL YOUR FLUID ON A TURBO AND NO OBVIOUS LEAKS,CHECK YOUR P/S FLUID LEVEL(PROBABLY HIGH).THEY WILL SOMETIMES LEAK INTERNALLY AT THE SLAVE CYLINDER.
