Well, unless things have changed my 99's owner's manual says the AC compressor "...can switch off briefly if engine is under an extreme load to ensure sufficient engine cooling..."

I would think, but I could be wrong that full throttle is an "extreme load"...

At times A/C can cut out if the car is driven hard and is on the threashold of overheating. It should not however do it consistantly at full throttle.

The compressor on my 2.5L Boxster definitely cut off during full throttle acceleration, such as a 50mph to 80mph pass of a truck. You could immediately feel the change in humidity. Very noticable. Also, using max AC cooling in city driving (with top down), the power drain on the 2.5L from the compressor load was dramatic; so much so that I would set the auto control to the highest temp that would keep me fairly comfortable, in order to limit the engine power loss.

On my 3.4L, the power drain is minimal, almost imperceptible.

Haven't noticed the 996 compressor cut off during acceleration, but that is probably due to the 3.4L having to not work so hard from 50-80mph. My guess is that it would shut off during a 0- 100mph full throttle run.

At the Porsche Driving Experience, I never had any issues with the compressor cutting out on me despite lap after lap of extreme conditions...just wanted to add that FWIW

I will get that "just turned the AC off" smell in my car after spirited driving. It is very short term, and appears to come up after bringing the car over 4.5k rpms. It is just a quick smell, then it's over. It can happen at every stop light if I'm in the mood to push the car.

Sounds like you may have mold in your ventilation system.
