Default Tuning Pole - What You Have or Don't

Hey guys. Looking to do a pole.

What ECU are you running and why. If you are NOT running one then why not. If you have done your research and have or dont have one, then why do you think that one is the best.

Just curious on why Carrera guys are tuning with...

I have a hard time believing that any freelancer can do better than Weissach r/t an adaptive and learning algorithm in a naturally aspirated motor. I believe aftermarket tuners can get dynos to give higher peak numbers and can shift the torque curve, but is it a more balanced product? How does Porsche get HP out of these motors? They add fuel and air delivery capacity with mechanical changes; hence the M96 powerkit. Forced induction Porsche motors are another story. Just $.02.

I have had my P-car only 4 months. I have seen a few references about the GIAC on the forum, but the comments discussions were very general. Not sure exactly what you get for swapping from stock to after market chip.

I agree with re-animaotor, zero gains, just smoke and mirrors. Save your money, if it was that easy to get 25hp on a m96, why wouldn't porsche just do that instead of the powerkit?

I think the chip does much more for a turbo than an NA. Of course you must realize the standard ECU set-up by Porsche is decided based on compromises between performance and fuel ecnomy. If you are willing to give up one for the other, you will need some tuning.

Comments re: n/a tuning only:

It's been proven that the Porsche ECU does adapt to higher octane, so we aren't getting a weak tuning for crap gas.

What I do believe Porsche does it build a ton of safety into their tuning -- protection against detonation, for one. I personally appreciate that level of safety, and don't believe you can make power gains without losing some of that safety margin.

knowing that the x51 kit allowed for a 25HP gain i knew there was still a little headroom for tuning so i took the plunge with GIAC. well known and was easy to mod. took only 5 minutes to flash.

regarding the x51 kit for the 3.4L and 3.6L i have "heard" that the +25HP increase is a very conservative figure.

with all my mods i have dynoed a potential ~277-281 RWHP (verified on a dynojet and dynapac). one mod to go to realize the potential, gt3 mk1 rear deck with cutout for the evo intake then it will breathe "properly".

these m96 engines CAN be tuned from mild to wild. look at this beast, 315 RWHP! ya it has some race guts but look at the potential

That motor is steel sleeved with a Motec. It is nice to know that the potential is there in raw form, but that is a far cry from flashing a factory M96, IMHO.

defintely a far cry but when i eventually turn my 996 into a dedicated track car it's nice to know i can do something like the lansky car, short of putting a gt3 engine into it

Cool, Can't wait until my warranty expires so I can by a Supercharger kit from Dan.
