Default Need Help 996 Brakes...

The brakes on our '02 996 are making a scrapping noise. The noise is from the rear driver's side. The noise goes away after driving and seems to be there when cold and/or after having the parking brake on. I have had the car on the track recently and really worked the brakes. I flushed the brake fluid and bled the brakes after the track event. There is a sheet metal plate behind or on the inside of the rotor. I think this plate is rubbing the rotor or the parking brakes are dragging. Any inputs or suggestions???

did you change pads recently or still on original pads? Noise happens only when you brake cold or when you drive as well?

if the sound goes away when the brake is warmed up, I think it's just the pad needing to warm up. This should go away after 2 stops. Check for clearance between rotor and other parts. if you changed pads recently, your pistons may not be retracted all the way in.

If it's really bad, you can pull the pads and check for shimms to put some "disc brake quiet" on them.

These plates you mention have a tendancy to warp a little after track use.My guess is that it has done exactly that .Just try and pull it away from the rotor and see if the sound goes away

Sounds like the emergency brake shoe rubbing. This is common after using the brake. Try not to use it and see if the noise stops. You can also apply the emergency brake gently while driving which will clean up the drum. There is a drum/shoe brake on each back wheel.

The noise is not when using the brake pedal at all. It is just when starting up after using the parking brake or when real cold. I have tried pushing the backing plate out of the way and this helps. I've just used my hands. I don't know if I should get out some channel locks and bend things some more or what. I'll try bending some more and applying the e-brake gently while driving. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

If riding the emergency brake for a short distance does not eliminate the noise, remove the back right brake assembly and clean and adjust the emergency brake. It may be frozen or a spring may have come off.

I'd say that your test with hand moving the backing plate confirms the culprit.Just do as you have suggested with the channel locks !cheers

I put on my work gloves and used both hands on each backing plate, both sides of the car. The noise appears to be gone!!! Thanks TVTH !!!

Sometimes after heavy track braking the drilled holes in the rotors are so filled with dust that they create a scraping noise, maybe try and wash them out.
