Changing Carrera logo -- trap for the unwary
Those of you who wish to replace your black decklid "Carrera" logo with a silver one (like the ones that come with C4's or C4S') should be aware that there are TWO different silver logos. One is used for 1999-2001 models, where the logo is mounted high on the rear decklid (centered vertically with the white or amber taillights) and the other is used for 2002-2004 models, where the logo is mounted lower on the rear decklid (centered vertically with the red taillights). The difference is that the higher mounting location is vertically convex, so the logo is flat vertically, and the lower mounting location is vertically concave, so the top of the "C" on the logo actually sticks out a bit to follow the curvature of the deck lid.
If you try to mount a 2002-2004 style logo on a pre-2002 996, you'll find that the top of the "C" just won't stay stuck to the decklid. I found this out after installing 3 of the incorrect logos on my 2001 coupe. Once I got the correct part, it came out perfectly. The interesting thing is that when I got the correct part number and called the guy at Silver Star Porsche in Roslyn, NY who kept selling me the wrong part, he claimed the number I gave him had been superceded and replaced with the part that he sold me. Nice coverup attempt. I then called another dealer who got me the correct part.
The part numbers are:
996-559-237-10-4PU (for 2002-2004)
996-559-237-07-4PU (for 1999-2001).

Interesting... I have a slightly different question then. I want to change the black "Carrera" logo to a silver/chrome "911" logo. Should I be aware of something similar? I think there is a chrome "911" oem part for the millenium edition and then there is the 40th one which is slightly different. Can anyone confirm? Mine is an 03' C2...

I don't know off the top of my head where on the decklid (high or low) the "911" logos are mounted on the two models you mention. Whichever one you get, plan on installing the logo at that location. Also, it could be the shape of the decklid for pre-2002's is slightly different than yours. For that reason, you may want to get the logo for a 40th anniversary edition. You should note that since you're not installing an identical logo, you need to be very throrough in terms of cleaning the area where the old one was. You can also get the specs for properly locating the new "911" logo from this or another of the 996 boards so that it's in the proper spot on the decklid.

Just go to the Porsche dealer they can do it for you, I picked up my 996 C2 Conv w/911 badge I think they charged me $75 for parts + install - that way you'll be safe that you won't damage anything and you'll have the right part

Hey, I have an idea. Can someone give them a call, tell them you have a 2001 911 and are looking to replace the black logo with the silver one? Get the part number and tell us whether he gave you the correct one. If he gave you the wrong one again, then he truly believes what he told me and wasn't just covering up.

Well, in all fairness, I went back to Silver Star...
to return the unused incorrect silver Carrera logo. Both the guy who said the correct part was superceded and the parts manager were there. They looked up the correct part, and sure enough they both said it was "superceded" on their computer. So, I guess, in the end, it wasn't there fault, and they weren't covering up their initial mistake.
