again...details, details. 
Now...if you don't remember, factory mods / changes to the 996 platform had already begun taken into account when the car hit the U.S. shores. I consider it a benefit, as I could use feedback from our friends across the pond for info when I was looking to buy.
As an example of what I mean, I bought a brand new Audi TT (mistake #1) 225hp Coupe Quattro when the 225's were first released. (mistake #2) I had more issues with that damn car than any other car I have ever owned. Paint, electronics, drivetrain, etc...ugh. Fun little car but a complete P.O.S. of a system.
The point of this whole thing is, Porsche has released the 997 here and the ROW a the same time. Now this is no chance to get insight.
I will admit, if anyone is going to have a strong running, trouble free platform it's Porsche. Overall, I stand by what I said. It's a sensible rule of thumb.

RJMDAD996: Looks like you need to do further soul searching. Taking money/offers aside you may want to seriously consider if you're ready to part with the Targa concept, especially in light of Summer approaching... Can you really let go of the Targa experience and move into a coupe? Looks like on your #4, the answer is no.

I have a older boxster and a 996 C2.
I just got shafted (no pun intended (intermediate driveshaft/RMS)) by Porsche on the boxster. I am looking to sell it anyway, but now I' even more worried about the 996.
IF I get another Porsche (rather than an Aston Martin/Maserati/Z08/M5/M6) then it will be a GT3 or TT.I am not going to pay another $1500 for RMS when the only issue I had in 8 years of driving Alfa Romeos/BMW's was 1 clutch and some brakes/tires.

I agree from past experiences (not with the P), that I would avoid a first model. I also agree that the likelyhood of "bugs" to be worked out on a P is unlikely, but not out of the question. I would suggest that styling and performance improvements are likely 2-3 years into the 997 model run, which will be worth waiting for, such as the 2002 996 improvements which I think really improved the car.
Personally, I have been tempted by the "deals" being offerred on the remaining 996 TT cabs.

Wait some of the spring out.
your car should not really drop in value much over the next 4 months. who knows what will happen to the pricing on the S, other than to say it likely won't be increasing!.
