Question Rattle at the front

I saw an old thread where a '99 996 made a rattling noise at the front end when going over bumps and when slowing down. It did this once warmed up and my car is also suffering from the same symptoms. Not sure how it was concluded last time round but has anyone had this problem and if so, what's the cure?

I have a similar problem when turning right and unloading the front suspension. Get a sharp tap in the front. Last time, believe it or not, tightening the sun roof slide cassette took care of it. Have yet to try to get it fixed this time.

I just posted this, I'm having the same problem! Please let me know if you find anything out. The dealership told me to replace the tie rod and rack, but said it may not fix the problem!

Where at the front end? Inside or outside the car? Close to the windshild or close to the front bumper?

I think I have earned my Ph.D in Porsche rattles and noise repair over the years.

Check the front sway bar end link nut (that goes thru the strut and holds the strut in).

Another problem I've seen is that the upper strut mount can get ripped apart (makes a loud hollow banging noise), especially if you hit something hard, or if you are using stiffer than stock springs (in my case PSS9).

Sounds like something is loose in the front suspension. Go jack it up and look for it or either have your wrench check it out. Sway bar links are common to get loose.

The front rattle is outside the car, it only happens after the car is driven for about a half hour. When I took into the shop they went to tighten the sway bar link and the bolt broke. They replaced this and thought they fixed it, but didn't. Darren above mentioned a strut mount, the sound it rather hollow, not for sure if it would make the sound as soon as you got in the car and took off. I have decided to take it to an independent mechanic (not the dealer again!).

Well, I took it to an independent mechanic and they replaced the other sway bar link but did not do any good. If you were deaf, you could feel the sound/rattle thru the steering wheel and clutch........maybe yhe brake and gas pedal, notice the most when my foot is slightly on the clutch. I really wish 911911 could help, it's the exact problem I have! They mentioned taking the spring off and test driving it to see if they could find out anything....it's amazing that without an engine in the front, it could be so complicating.

Is there a golf ball in the trunk??

I think they will have to take the front struts off and go over everything -- My guess is still that upper strut mount.

you were right it was a PRO-V1.............I called them today to let them know the sound was still there, the mentioned the next step was to take the strut off and look it over, how hard is it to check the upper mount?

Its fairly easy to remove the strut, I think I can do it in about 15 minutes. I'd try to figure out what side it is by driving that wheel over a pot hole or something. Once it is removed from the car, you take off the nut at the top and remove the upper mount. If its bad, you'll see that the middle steel insert is ripped away from the rubber of the mount.

Send me a PM if you want more detailed instructions on removing it.
