It’s a funny thing about owning a 911. It can bring such highs… and such lows. There is the first time I saw one as a young boy, my first ride. The high of first time I saw my 911 role out of the car transport into the sunlight. The low of the trip to the dealer to argue over a RMS leak “996”. My sons first drive in his car seat… oh so careful. Having to replace the rear tires once a year. Tail wagging fun at the race track.
Today was another low, the end of my lease… I never thought a car would affect me in such a way. How can someone feel emotion about an object. As I sit here and write this, I think I can put it something like this. I did not care for the object so much as what the car enabled. So many fun trips out to and around the foot hills of West Virginia. So many people I have met. The way my son asks everyday to take a ride in the porschhhhhaaaaa “he’s three”.
Its been some of the best three years of my life… For those who own their's and the ones who still have the lease timer ticking… Go for a drive… Every minute wasted is a minute wasted on the road.
So I’m off to the dealer to look at the new 997S. You did not think I would be Porsche-less for long did you???
I just had lunch w/my ex-partner, who is the Co-Chairman of Universal Music Group/Nashville....he's had a zillion cars, including several Porsche's....but it's been years for him.....I picked him up in my P....he looked around, and marveled at how, even though there are changes through the years, it's still that very familiar style, which keeps it looking ageless......that's why I bought mine......years from now, it will still look & perform great, as long as I treat it right......I've always admired people who kept their cars for long periods, and treated them accordingly.
Great post which really captures the sentiments of most of us! And the kids add to the fun - my 3 y/o daughter loves to go in Daddy's car - when there's a choice, she'll yell about it! She calls it the "POOR-SHA!!"; Daddy's car goes "VROOM VROOM", and Mommy's Cayenne S goes "vroom vroom" (that's a deep growly "VROOM VROOM" and a higher pitched "vroom vroom").
Don't wait - hurry up and find a 997S - best one I've owned yet!
When I loaded up my 2001 C4 and shipped it to my buyer in CA I was very emotional. It was my first 911, and I already had my 2004 C4s Cab, but it was a car I had dreamed of owning since I was 11 years old and it was going away. My wife was very surprised that she was also emotional, she couldn't believe it because for the most part she could care less, but like Kirby said, it's a lifestyle.
Great cars, I hope I'm fortunate enough to own one for as long as I can drive.
"At Porsche we build cars that are everything to someone istead of something to everyone." - Best Porsche tag line.
I love my 996 also. However, it's not my first love and probly not my last either. I have close connection with my cars so it's almost like a relationship except I own the car and not the girl...
I wish I can keep more than one girl someday. Oops, I meant one car... LOL
