Question Oil Question?

I know for my 04 C2 that Porsche recommends 10-40w Mobil 1. Where do you guys buy it? I can't seem to find it at any of my usual sources and I'd rather not pay dealer prices for it. Thanks...

I buy Mobil 1 in 5 gal. jugs at Wal-Mart. They usually have in the various weights that P-car owners need.

Isn't the factory fill M1 0W-40 not 10w-40? 0W40 can be found at Autozone, some Wal-Marts (not in the big jugs though) and some other auto parts stores.

OW-40 is official factory oil and is what they recommend, this much I know for sure about oil. Where it goes once it is put in the crank case I'm working on.

I think only those from Oregon and Washington will recognize the store name...but G.I. Joes has tons of it...but they never have the one that I use -- 0-40 Mobile 1...which I get over at Schucks.

Had same question-which oil, checked owners manual for '99 C4, says 10w-40 accross all temp ranges.
Mobil does not make it but Castrol does, $5/qt. at Autozone. That's what I'm using.

You might want to consult the PCA website Tech Section. There are more recent list of recommended oils from Porsche than what was printed in the owners manual in 98-99.

Synthetic is definitely the factory fill.

Manual says 10-40. Dealer says they use 0-40. I went with 0-40 because I choose to believe that the lower viscosity at lower temp will improve lubrication during start/warm up.

I'm using 0-40, which is easier on startup wear and less pollution. It's what Porsche and Moble One recommends. Never use anything that is not synthetic.

I get mine at Kragen (Schuck's). It's $4 if you get it on sale. I bought over 6 cases since I have two cars using the same oil. It'll last me a couple of years.

I don't think Mobil 1 EP 10w40 is available anywhere yet. 0w40 is the factory fill on new Porsches. The Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w40 is also supposed to be excellent oil, essentially identical to Mobil Delvac 1 synthetic diesel oil. The 5w40 is available at walmart for under $20 for 5 quarts.
The current factory recommendation for all Porsches is any ACEA A3 approved synthetic oil in 0w40, 5w40, or 5w50.
Mobil 1 0w40 was recently changed to meet the US SM specification. They had to reduce some of the antiwear additives to meet SM. The new 0w40 MAY not be as good as it was. The new Mobil 1 "EP" oils do not meet the SM spec and have lots of good additives. I've seen the EP oil in 5w30, 10w30, and 15w50. Hopefully the 10w40 EP will be available soon.

I got M1 0W-40 at Advance Auto Parts, but at $5 per quart.
