Clicking noise from '02 996 manual transmission
Hey guys,
New to the forum. Just picked up an 02 996 and noticed today that when I put the car in neutral from 1 and 2, there is a clicking sound coming from the gearbox. Not sure if this is normal or if I should get this checked out. Any advice here would help. thanks...

Is the clicking sound coming from the gearbox itself or from the clutch pedal? The clicking sound from the clutch pedal is normal. There is a switch in the clutch pedal that tells the car when the clutch is depressed (so that you can start the engine.)
BTW, welcome to the board. It is tradition here for newcomers to post pics of their car and give a short intro. Congratulations on your new car!

The sound is definitely coming from the gearbox. It is generally audible when I am in First or Second and then put the clutch in.
Thanks for the welcome, will definitely post a picture when I get my camera from my other place.

So you're pretty sure he needs a new gearbox because of a click when he depresses the clutch? Wow.
Plyah: my car does this when I depress the clutch too. It sounds like an electric switch on the clutch, actually.

It is more than a simple click, it sounds like the gear may be loose in the box. The sound goes on for about 1-2 seconds after the clutch goes in. Sounds like Ill have to get it checked out by the dealer.
What are dealership policies on loan cars... I live in Los Angeles so would take it either to Auto gallery or Walter's porsche where I picked up the car. Thanks.

I don't believe dealers will open the box to repair, rather replace the whole unit. He states the sound persists for 1-2 seconds after he depresses the clutch? Not the usual click.

If the noise is porduced ONLY while depressing the clutch predal, it is inlikely that it is the tranny. All the clutch pedal does is move the throwout bearing against the pressure plate which removes the clutch disc from the flywheel. My guess is pedal noise or clutch assembly noise. A liitke more info would be helpful. Is the car moving at the time of the noise or just sitting? Can it reproduced while declerating and depressing the clutch.
If it is the tranny, it shouuld be easily identfied as such my scoping the sound while on the lift.

There are very few parts available for the G96 box. Porsche and Getrag have not released them. There was some talk of Hetrag making the parts available about 2 years back but nothing has come of it. The only bits available are seals and some bearings. Other than that, you have to replace the entire box. Also, if the box has been opened, Porsche will not in any way entertain a replacement. They will only accept closed/sealed boxes.
There is a specialist gearbox company that PAG themselves use based in Belgium. They sell recon seal and bearing kits. But you have been warned: http://www.am-tc.be/porsche.shtml
