Cool Friends 2002 Carrera 4

Friend and I were discussing his 320? hp car versus my wifes 302 hp E500. Of course tons of difference - but we were just discussing the engines. I finished the discussion by reminding him that his was with 6 cylinders and my Wifes car had to do it in 8.

Porsche squeezes quite a few HP's out of a 6. Up and down the ladder. My on order Turbo "S" at 444 hp is still a 6. I'm impressed.

imagine an 600-800hp 4 cylinder like some modified 944 Turbos and Evo 8s and STis... what's your point?

Not a very complex point. I like that Porsche squeezes a lot of HP out of a 6. BMW is pumping 500HP out of their new 10. I don't know if the BMW can be modded much - Dinan will tell us soon. But yes, Porsches and others can be further modded for much more.

Still, not a complex point.

:-) no worries...

It is very admirable that smaller engines can hang with the big boys, you are right. But a V8 sedan is not really all that great of a comparison to your 996. I bet that sedan has more torque too.

When you get your 996 you can have it modified to 550 HP just by changing the boost inc. air/fuel ratio. Bigger turbos and you can go even higher (in the new "Excellence" magazine they have a comparisson between modified TT, Evolution Motorsport's TT has 830 HP).

I think specific Hp (ie, HP per litre) is more of an indicator than HP/cylinder. HTe Ferrari and BMW M cars generally squeeze more NA HP/litre out of thier cars. BUT, peak HP isn't the whole story - as you can achieve big HP by designing an engine that can rev to 8000+ rpm (HP = TQ x revs, after all).

I prefer the smoother TQ & power delivery across a broad rev range that the P-cars produce.

I was just thinking about that. BMW Talks about hitting the 100 hp per liter mark with the new 10 cylinder engine - 5.0. But is has approx. 383 ft lb of torque. The Turbo "S" has 444 hp and 457 ft lb torque or somewhere close in some power curve? The 3.6 liter engine hits approx. 123 hp per liter. Can we make the same comparison with torque? BMW would equal 76 ft lb per liter and the Turbo "S" would equal 126?? Nearly double?

whe you talk about HP per Liter, it is usually referring to Naturally Aspirated cars

cars with forced induction don't count.

PS. the GT3 MK2 engine makes 106 hp per liter, about about 77ft/lb of torque per liter.
