Hi from a new member - creaking steering problem...advice please
This is my first post on the forum so hello to everyone.
Formalities over...i'm having a problem with creeking steering so if any of you are a bit of a techie know it all when it comes to the mechanics of a 996, few minutes of your time reading this would be greatly appreciated.
Over a period of a few months i noticed a low grade creaking eminating from the very front of the car. It was only noticeable when going over sleeping policemen or on a bumpy uneven road, there was no noise at rest or whilst going from lock to lock at rest. I took it to a specialist who i've used before and had excellent service. He suggested that it could be sealed joints on the front lower track control arms, so the whole arms were replaced. Unfortunately the problem persisted, so they stripped the front suspension and found both front strut top mountings to be completely perished. Also replaced at this point as the suspension was stripped were both front strut top bearings and both scuttle clips.
The garage was very good and showed me the worn components. Total cost was a very reasonable £678 which included all porsche approved parts.
This was a couple of months ago now, initially the car immediately felt tight and solid. After a couple of weeks i noticed a significant creaking sound (a completely new noise) which appeared to be coming from the steering column region and not front suspension. The creaking is always at start off when turning from lock to lock and appears to go after 30 mins or so of driving (maybe as components warm up?).
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be? Could it just be something needing greesing? Why don't i go back to the original garage i hear you ask, well i have and the block of industrial units that housed said garage were being demolished!!! I presume that he has moved to larger facilities but i have no idea where!
Cheers
Nobby

nobby: I have read about a similar problem on this forum somewhere. Try a search. Sorry I don't remember from where. There was a solution also, if I remember correctly. I have never had any noises like the one's you describe.

It was me that posted the steering problems. My car is a 2003 C2 and this started on mine with about 5000 miles, that is if we are talking about the same problem.
With mine you can hear and feel a knocking noise when quickly moving the steering wheel left and right just a little. What is interesting is that while I do this if I turn the engine off the knocking play stops immediately. So with mine it seems to be power steering related in the rack somewhere.
In a few weeks it goes in for a complete new front end, if that doesn't work I trade it in and never look back.
