Strangely enough, it's not squeaking anymore and I didn't do anything. The noise in my steering column went away too. Regardless, I'll have them lubricate the clutch next time I'm in for an oil change. I'm going to grab that TSB now too. Thanks guys!

The squeaky clutch is a common problem on the 996. I've heard about it from ohhhh, about 100000000 people. Throw a little grease on it and it should be fine.

I AM a contributing member of renntech.org, but when I went looking for the TSB, I found it listed but was unable to view it. There aren't any links. What gives?

It's probably the slave clutch cylinder spring and it requires the replacement of the slave clutch. Unfortunately it requires the (you guessed it) removal of the engine to do so if you don't have the warranty it will cost a just a few bucks.

Good luck.

Since when does changing the slave clutch require removing the engine? What you're smoking must be pretty expensive.

Hi all,

I just recently purchased a 2001 996 c4. I have the same noise. There is no noise when the car is cold. It come from the rear of the car also with or without the engine running. The clutch works fine, engagement/disengagement is fine, its just noisy and annoying.

What was the disposition of the problem discussed/ Was it the clutch slave cylinder. Did lubing it help. If the slave was bad, did replacement require removal of the engine. It appears from 1999Porsche911's post that is not required to replace a slave cylinder.

Mine used to squeak. I lubricated the helper spring and now it doesn't squeak anymore.
