Default <2002 96 Cupholders?

Hi

I am considering a 996 purchase and it may be 1999 - 2001 model. Not that this will make or break the 'deal' when I see the right car, but does anyone have any pics of the 1999-2001 and/or 2002 - 996 cupholders?

Thanks in advance ... from what I have heard/read the cupholders in the first 996's just 'clipped' onto the air vents?

Best,
Mark Strachan

Mark,

Personally the cup holders in the pre 02 are disgusting. Dont know what the interior design team was even thinking. The 02+ holders are integrated into the dask under the central air vents whereas pre 02 they were an option but might have been standard equipment after a certain date? Someone might correct me. At the end of the day as you said not a deal breaker

Regards

Do not know anyone who has done this as the air vent changed in 2002 when the new style cupholder went into production.

2000 996s, at least my C2, do not have cupholders. Having seen the cupholders on newer 996s and Boxsters, they strike me as pretty cruddy. I added an aftermarket one from http://www.ultimatecupholders.com/ and have been VERY happy with this one. I also put one of these in my '98 528i, which has what BMW alleged were cupholders in the dash but didn't work worth a darn.

Just choose a 996 that you like and add an aftermarket cupholder. It will work better than the cupholders in the newer Porsches anyway.

rpatt: I like those. I really like the fact that if they spill, its only the floor matts that suffer. I have the 01' cup holders in my car that take up one of the din spots. I keep threatening to remove them as the few times I have used them, they always spill onto the shifter, etc....

Don't bother with the stock ones. Get the Ultimate cupholder, it sits on the passenger floor and it's all stainless. It looks great and more important "it works"

rpratt, that link looks great www.ultimatecupholders.com I am usually so "anti-non-oem" but these look very discreet and the wort possible scenario spill-wise is the carpet.

Thanks all for your feedback. ArthurK, I will email you direct, we'll catch up soon.

Test driving a 2001 Lapis Blue Tip Coupe on Friday - unlikley to be "the one" but it looks great.

Best,

Get a 997. The cup holders double as handcuffs and stirrups for your girlfriend.

Mark,

I am taking my car in tomorrow for a service. I'll take a quick look at current inventory when I'm there.

Default cupholders

I had the clipped on air vent cupholders as a dealer accessory on my 2000 C4, and they were, candidly, worthless. Just a personal opinion. On my 2004, they are integrated into the dashboard; pull it out for one, pull it out further for two. I have also had condensation drip down into the HVAC controls, and this resulted in a warranty claim. I suppose they realize it is a flawed design. My '02 GTI 337 had a similar set up with similar results. On my '04 R32, VW has given up the dash mounted cupholders in favor of cutouts on the center console. Not quite as convenient, but safer.

I think there is absolutly nothing wrong with the clip on cup holders other than estetics! On the other hand they are neat since they can be removed if you don't like them. I got mine so that I can have a cold bottle of water on my commute to the track!
