power at wheels will be affected by rim size and whether you have a 6-speed or triptronic...

i.e. 17" rims... more WHP than the heavier 18" rims... test temperature also has a lot to do with it...

do not think it is that low. around 255 hp
45 hp loss in transmition and other friction factors?
definetelly not arounf 230 as stated. 70 hp loss i.e. around 23 % loss would apply on 4X4 cars.

differences should be shown on different dynos as well, assuming that weather conditions are the same, if it can be achieved which is impossible.

ussually testers dyno the car 3 times, and take the average.

I talked to a guy here in Toronto that dyno's these cars... specifically the 99's he said were around 255-260... he sayd he's seen one as high as 280WHP (stock)... the 99's where the first 996's out and apparently the explanation is that some where special or the engines porsche made had inconsistent power output ... personally I believe the latter

^ yeah that would b an explanation..probably also if its tip or 6spd, how the car was broken in, what condition the drivetrain components r in etc etc..

Different dyno models are all different, IMO its better to use the dyno hp as a reference for tuning, than for absolute numbers. Besides, what matters is what happens on the road at speed.

Those TV shows always seem to have dynos that read high, which makes for a better show.

I am the friend that Darren talked about.

My car was dyno'ed at 236 - 240 at the wheels (different runs). To the best of my memory the guy who did the dyno runs put in 3,400 pounds as weight (I don't know what that means as to the horse power output). The dyno machine might be called Mustang something. It is a 2000 coupe with 6 speed.

Wheel sizes were 225 / 17 and 255 / 17.

ok results are in.

this was done on a Dynojet inground dyno, in 4th gear.
Results: 257.64HP and 219.34TQ
the car is on 18" wheels..so that probably took the numbers down a bit..

here is the graph...the red line is what you wanna look at..the rest is all bs.

Can I ask a question? Why does the owners manual (98 996 6spd) state power output at 221kw or 297hp when you guys a getting these figures?

Simple, Porsche is quoting the figure "at the crankshaft" and these dyno runs are measured "at the wheels".

See the difference?

Dead-eye - thanks for posting. I didn't realize the torque curve was so flat -- guess variocam works!

What is the name of the show you will be on? I used to watch Sports *Car* Revolution -- is this a new series Sports *Compact* Revolution. If its the same show, did you come in higher than your estimate to Jaimee?
