wow...sad. I feel for you since I know first hand the "issues" that are at least possible with some early 99 cars. I had a Sept 98 build 996 that was an absolute nightmare (RMS twice, same clutch blow you described, electrical gremlins, leaking sunroof...and the list goes on). The car practically LIVED at Barrier Porsche in Bellevue/Seattle to the point where PCNA at their OWN request bought the car back and literally handed me a brand new 2001 (at $15K difference in ++ options and regardless of the fact that the 99 base car had 23K miles on the clock). Needless to say that even though the 2001 car had a failed RMS at 3K it was still a night and day different (worlds better) car that was fully sorted it seems that far in to production of an entirely new gen car for Porsche.

Although I now drive daily a 97 993 I do think the 996 is a great car.....although I would not ever consider or recommend a 99 model (without extended warranty) but that's just my personal experience and/or two cents FWIW.
