I just traded my '95 993 for an '02 C4S - silver 6-speed. So far (2 days) the car is great. Exceptional power and handling and yet easy to drive. My wife even drove it!!
One question about the road noise. It seems to howl at highway speeds - road or tire noise (maybe engine). Is this normal ? I can't say that it is a terrible noise, I just want to be sure that there is no rear end problem.
Last question- do the '02's have any history of RMS problems? If they do, what can one do to anticipate this?

Thanks to all
ROwen

Default Tires

The conti factory tires that came on my 01 C4 became extremely noisy at about 8000 miles and conti bought them back.

RMS at 7500 miles...no big deal if your car is under warranty.

If your RMS ever goes(cross your fingers) you'll notice a 25-50 cent size oil drip on the garage floor behund the oil pan cover. Shorterm no need to tow the car to dealer to get it fixed so it's still drivable. Longterm oil will seep into flywheel/clutch therefore both need to be replaced. If RMS happens dealer has a tool to check if crank is out of spec. If within spec just RMS if out of spec new engine. My 99 996 leaked at 9k miles andd had 41k miles and never leaked from then on and I go to 10-12 DE's a year and drive it very hard(no garage queen here) . IF possible ask when they maeasure the crank how much out of spec it is. IF it's more closer then out of spec then RMS may come more often. Regards. Mike

Congratulations – the C4S is an awesome machine IMHO.

I get some wind noise at speed that seems to come from the passenger side mirror. Can’ say for sure but it is definitely noticeable.

It's tough to say without actually hearing it, but my '03 C4S, which has P-Zero tires, has become louder and louder from tire noise (it now has 8k miles) and probably could be described as a howl.

Fishman: I drove the car today for 5 1/2 hours on a business trip. The noise is a howl at times but seems to be related to the type of pavement. On some surfaces it diminishes and on others (e.g. seal coated) it gets worse. I think I will have it checked out eventually but it doesn't appear to be a big problem.

By the way, the trip was on a 2-lane highway and I had a great time - some parts are fairly remote, so no police. The car is wonderful. Corners? - what corners?

Glad to hear you're enjoying it. I'll be hunting for some new tires soon. Michelins, perhaps? I get a lot of rain...

Had the same problem with mine when I bought it, conti sport tires but they were worn really bad on the innermost tread block (totally smooth). Really bad highway drone made it hard to talk in the car.

Replaced tires and it made a 100% improvement....BUT Beware! Make sure you get your alignment done when you get new tires. I didn't and my 6000 mile michelins were beginning to make noise also. Had the alignment done and both camber and toe-in were way off.

Car sounds much quieter now, even though I've lost some life on my Michelins.

Short answer, could be the tires, could be alignment, could be both.

I also just bought a '02 (996) and the road noise was awful. I had four new P-zero tires put on, and the noise virtually disappeared - I can actually hear the engine now! When you get new tires, be sure to get an allignment, or they will scuff immediately.

Enjoy!
