Default Looking for a trickle charger recommendation

I'm looking for a trickle charger to maintain my battery during the winter. Does anyone have any experience with the Schumacher SE-1-12S ? Any other good ones out there.... and where to buy??

Thanks,

Matt

I too use the Porsche Battery Maintainer with great results. I've had two of them hooked-up to two cars for more than four years with no battery failures. Can't go wrong.

Viken,
I have one that someone gave me when I purchased my first Porsche. But when I tried to use it recently, I noticed the little light on the plug did not light up. Is the little light on the front of the plug supposed to be on when it is charging?

Yes, it is supposed to be on while charging. However, I noticed that mine stays mostly off. I guess if you have a healthy battery, the charger doesn't have to work as hard. If you are concerned whether or not the charger is working, check the temperature with your hand. It should be a bit warm. That means it's working.

BMW has one that works well on a P-car. It's a lighter plug in also.

Suncoast Porsche has the Porsche battery maintainer on sale online at $55 (no affiliation with them but have shopped there with good luck).

Porsche now has a new charger/battery maintainer.
Compared to the smaller one, this one can actually charge a flat battery and then works as a battery maintainer.

Yes, the red light should be off the majority of the time, as the battery is fully charged (or floating).

If you want to make sure it's working, merely open the door and turn on the headlights/start the car/place a load on the battery. The red light should come on immediately as the charger senses the drop in battery voltage and begins trickle charging once again.

MJM,

I used the Schumacher SE-1-12S my previous Boxster and 993 during the winter. I really liked it and had absolutely no problems. I would buy another for the 996 except that I drive it everyday now.
