Default 996 vs. 997

Having spent the past 2 weeks reading every post on this board, I find it funny that there is such a seperation between "old school" Porsche enthusiasts and newer enthusiasts, especially when it comes to 993, 996, 997 models.

It reminds of the BMW boards for the 7, 5, and 6 series cars.

While there are a ton of folks who feel the styling on the new BMWs is awful, no one denies that the cars are mechanically and structurally better, a complete advancement over the previous generation cars. And styling is such a subjective area.

In regards to Porsche, you cannot deny that the 996 is a much better car than the 993. It has more power (water-cooled, but still more power), handles better, better reliability, more comfort, a better all-around p-car.
The styling is subjective, I personally think the 996 is the best looking Porsche evr made. The 997 is probably a better all-around car (in S form), but the looks are also subjective.

I like tradition, but stepping back is the wrong move for Porsche.

The 996 is lighter, more powerful, better chassis, better ergonomics, cup holders but better reliability remains to be seen. I do not believe the 996 motor will prove to be more reliable than the 993.

I'm not so sure about the reliability issue. I'm no fan of the 996 engine design, lack of traditional dry sump etc..., but mine has been very reliable throughout the last 5 years with lots of track time. On the other hand the 993 has not been without problems, for example wiring harness defects and CEL that are not minor repairs. I think it remains to be seen how the 996 wil play out in terms of long term 100K plus milage reliability, but I believe the jury is out on the 993 too. The 3.2(?) SC s are probably the bench mark for 911 longevity. Don't get me wrong the 993 is a wonderful car, I still kick myself for not buying one new, I don't want this to turn into a 993 vs 996 thing.
BTW I love your 993TT, one of these days I'll get one of those beasts.
