I was trying to index the various forums because I need new rear tires for my 996 Carrera 4S. Besides the Michelins, are there other good tires you have used?

I have Sumitomo HTR Z3 on my 6Turbo which are a great daily use tire. They're up to Z4 which I have heard are not as good.

I use General G-Max RS tires in warm weather and Continental Extreme Contact in cold. Both have served me really well.

OP - What are you already running? All-season or summers (and put the car in the garage when you get the cold snap)? What kind of tire attributes are you searching for? Did you hit up Tirerack reviews?

AWD owners can comment more but isn't there a limitation or two regarding F/R tire diameters? That might play into your decision.

Yes there is P-spec on diameter differences.
I do not remember the exact difference, but rear must be smaller diameter than the front IIRC. There was a page on tires & diameters with various combinations. Lost it when laptop crashed. Others may know where to find it...hopefully.

YMMV

General G-Max RS are a great budget oriented tire. Stiffer sidewall than Michelin which results in a bit rougher ride by comparison but returns a more direct turn-in. They're actually made in the same factory as Continental tires, just use a different mold. Michelin PS4S is still my favorite all around tire.

Factory sizes for C4S/Turbo are 225/40-18 and 295/30-18. I do not think PS4 are available in these sizes.

I really like my Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 tires. Good grip, pretty quiet and a bit cheaper than the PS4.

I have used these on my 996 for the last year and they’re a pretty awesome tire. I’ve used PS4S before, but on a Golf R so it’s not really comparable, but they feel pretty similar. At the time Michelin wasn’t producing the PS4S in the 285/30/18. It looks like that’s changed, but I don’t know if I’ll change to them when replacement time comes.

I had Pirelli P Zero Rossos on my C2 when I bought it. They were fine, but got really loud near the end of their tread life. I tried the Sumitomo HTR Z3 and they were pretty good for the price. The only think I didn't like about them was the shoulder profile as it didn't protect the rims as well as the Pirellis. Unfortunately I found it was easier to nick up the rims with the Sumitomos. I changed over to the Bridgestone Potenzas and have been happy with those. Price is a little higher than the Sumitomos, but the shoulder profile is similar to the Pirellis and the rims are a more protected. Wear has been good for me. Overall, I've been happy with that change.

My C2 came on Sumitomo HTRZ3's when I bought it and was very nervous feeling in the rear while understeering everywhere. Very weird, I've used that tire before on other cars and it's not great but also not awful.

Unfortunately I don't see C4S sizes for this but I'm currently a huge fan of Advan V601's as a pure street tire. Seems to last longer than PS4(s) as far as heat cycling goes, ride quality is good and dry grip is basically equivalent once you warm them up.

I did contnentals on my C2 this year. 225/40/18 and 285/30/18. Quite happy. Had pzreros before which I did not like. Would flat spot all the time.
