Happy Saturday! Two weeks ago I bought my third 996 in eight years. The first one was a ‘00 Cab, second one was a 5/98 built ‘99, and this time I wanted a Tiptronic 996.1. I found a senior owned garage kept “queen” with 41k miles that had only been driven 3000 miles in the last ten years. It had been regularly serviced but dating back to the original owner this was always a senior owned weekend cruiser.
I knew that none of the potential grenades had been addressed on it so after buying it at a very reasonable price I had a highly reputable Porsche shop in LA do the IMS, RMS, AOS, Water Pump, Spark Plugs, and they scoped all six cylinders. Everything was in very good condition, and it turned out Porsche used a dual row bearing on my Oct ‘00 build 996.
it seems as though Porsche was still using dual rows for quite a while into 2000.
If you don’t mind sharing, what does “regularly serviced” look like when 3000 miles are driven over 10 years? How often did the car receive an oil change?
I've heard of numerous failed dual rows... and all were FVD replacements that were supposed to be an improvement on the stock bearing!
I kinda regret having my dual row replaced. Was removed at 45k miles, and was in absolutely perfect condition.

When it comes to LN Engineering dual row replacement bearings I had two different Porsche specialists tell me they never had a 996 come back with a bad one.
