Default cost of new or rebuilt engine

Does anyone know what the cost is for a new or rebuilt 996 engine? Is it possible to put a 3.6 litre (MY2002 to MY2004) engine into a MY2000? I don't need one right now, but probably will someday.

Not possible to put a 3.6 in a pre-02.
I've heard rough figures at 5k for the motor 2k to install...but those are pretty rough.

It is possible to put a 3.6 in a 2000 but not really practical. I put a 3.6L X51 in my 996 club racer but I certainly would not do it in a street car. Too many compromises. On the other hand, the car screams.

A new/rebuilt engine from Porsche lists for around $8k but are readily available at $6,800. Installation is very straight forward and should come in under $1,000.

Moot,
Someone else might need to chime in but I believe the price you are being quoted is list price before receiving credit for your old engine. $6800 seems to be the going discounted rate for the 3.4L that Paul needs and I think the 3.6L is pretty similar. I bought my 3.6L and the x51 parts at the same time for just over $15K. I did not receive credit for my old engine.

As always, I'm just some guy on the internet and I could be wrong.

Don't buy from your local dealer. Call around and you'll find your local dealer is making $4500 profit for unloading the engine from the back of a delivery truck.

I didn't have that experience. I got mine from my local dealer for $6428 {$6767 - 5% PCA member discount}. The core charge is $2100 {so total upfront is $8528} but I'll get the $2100 back as soon as I return the old engine. BTW, this was for a 3.4L for my 99.

That sounds like a great price.

And if it helps to put it in perspective, the 289 engine in my GT350 cost $17,500 and was good for about 35 hours between rebuilds.
