There are a few well regarded euro shops in the seller’s area, so I’ll be taking it to at least one more shop for inspection if I decide to go for it.

Insurance was going to be too expensive on the car. I bought a clean title C4S for about the same price, and the insurance is about 5x cheaper per year.

I have found the “rebuilt” title can occur for so many different reasons I try really hard to determine the history that caused the branding, a flood car is scary to me, tub damage the same fear But also the insurance companies habit to pull the Total Loss trigger quickly for a bunch of reasons has always been interesting. I own a 1999 coupe that went into a culvert on the right side, car needed fender, bumper, and a wheel and insurance company totaled it. I think a few years ago the “book” value of many of our cars was at a low point so repair costs just made it easier to total especially during COVID years. Just a thought.

Recently purchased a similar car, rebuilt title in 2009, 83k miles and non factory XAA.

Purchase was $19k

Car is fantastic, if it checks out go for it at a 30% discount to FMV.

I have also had a couple of E36 M3’s with rebuilt titles both track cars. One was rebuilt for front end damage the other for paint, yes paint and it had been repainted to a high standard.

Resale will be an issue so do not over pay for the car, enjoy.

Here is our $19k 1999 Aerokit 996

So far we swapped out the aftermarket wheels and added GT3 sport seats
