Help please, Too much oil? What are the concerns?
- I recently had an oil change, and after, levels were perfect. But, because I can't leave well enough alone, I added 2x300ml bottles of liquimoly ceratec. I had a 4 hour drive ahead of me and figured the engine will get good and hot, so it's a good chance to apply the additive. But, the 600ml put my oil level indicator to the fill line the needle appears pinned.. Is 600ml over enough to damage the engine? It's 'ok so far' and I've put about 16 hours with the oil at this level, mostly highway, giving it plenty of Welly. Thoughts? Should I pump 500ml out? I have a pump and hose so it will only take 30 minutes, but it's it worth it? Thanks!

half a littre isn't bad.
it will get burned off if its too much, it wont drown the engine.
i wouldn't worry too much, but if it makes you sleep better, a seringue or a oil vacuum can arent expensive and will allow you to take the half litter that is bothering you.

that's a good tip tho, thanks. I'll be doing my own oil changes fairly soon, I have a move planned. Until then, I just don't feel right changing the oil in my condos parking lot. So I just go with the flow. I don't want to cause any friction.
.... I'll see myself out.

Damage,
Sorry you have to go thru the stomach churning. My guess is if your car wasn't smoking like a chimney you are probably ok. But i am not a mechanical engineer so hopefully Skip will see this and give you some thoughts. I would probably suck out some oil from your dip stick tube to get it down to full unless you are handy with getting under the car and draining some oil. Fwiw, you may want to consider the UAOS w/ Track Drain sometime in the future. You will never have to worry about overfilling again because the system can handle extra oil.

Yeah I've got a pump, will take 500ml out tomorrow. Better safe than sorry. I don't think I would buy the uids, but isn't there an add on for the UAOS that does similar? I've had my eyes on that for a while. I missed the sale, just had no money. And I got laid off from my job of 13 years two Thursdays ago. Grrrr. So buying parts is on hold briefly until I find a new gig. Not to worry, opportunity abounds. I've already been contacted about 2 attractive positions so it won't be long. A couple weeks of interviews and I'll be back in the saddle. With 2 months of severance in my pocket. Change is good!
Hang in there regarding the job front. it will happen soon enough.

Well, not sure of your model year, but 1 of the 'upgrades Porsche did to the earlier 996 was to change the dipstick.
The new dipstick changed the oil level 1/2qt less oil iirr, lower. Reason was all the problems with AOS sucking oil in race conditions or extended spirited driving.
So new dipstick was really a compromise of best oil level for engine lubrication vs not sucking oil thru the aos...
What I'm saying is the correct level for the ideal/best lubrication when engine development was in R&D, is probably the original dipstick with 1/2qt more oil...
More oil should be harder to get o p instability...lol On the other opi thread some of the guys are running 2 qts over with a just a good track type AOS, iirr...
You got a quality charge of oil, I wouldn't try to stick anything down the diptube in the engine or try to remove the drain plug to try and let a 'little out . IMO unless you've already got the upgraded nik'd engine, (bar the track) the last thing your 996 engine will have a problem with is 1/2 qt over full with a fresh quality oil. Especially if ya got a new or upgraded aos.
So with that said, as long as you don't plan to track it I'd go with it as is with not a worry.

Oh, I get it. You are just trying to augment what the tech does. My tech used the same oil until I took over the job with the LN Engineering spin-on filter, which makes it super easy, plus I can leave the oil at my town's transfer station. You might ask him his thoughts on Ceratec, or convince him to put it in for you. You provide the Ceratec, he puts it in first and fills up the rest with the French stuff. Then you don't have to worry. You can tell him with confidence that lots of 996 owners use Ceratec. It's your car and you he may appreciate your thinking about your car that way.
