Default Remote key

Bought two new keys several years ago. One seems to be going out, you have to stand very close to the car to unlock it. It's not because of the battery. Is it normal for the key to degrade after several years of use?

Hold it against your forehead or your chin to increase range. This is not a joke.

I've always noticed that the remote on my 996 is not very long. It doesn't seem to degrade. I've always had to be close to the car for it to unlock. I have a brand new, from dealer key. Same thing.

Quick story. I used to park my car behind a bank to go grab a coffee to go. Was driving a subaru at the time. The subaru would unlock at least 60 feet away. When the car was parked at this bank, I had to be right beside the car for it to unlock and sometimes with several tries. This was the only time there were issues.

Could there be any relation to the "where" you are trying to unlock the car?

My key remotes did this. Range started getting shorter to the point where I had to be right up next to the car for it to work. Now the remote functions don't work at all. Dealer took a look and couldn't help. With the $700 replacement cost I was quoted, I'm now just using the key old-school style.

I have the same issue with my 2005 C4S[996] and just put up with it. However there is a documented "mod" that has to do with the receiver wire in the A pillar drivers side. Looks fairly simple if you need more range.

first mod I did when I first bought the car. Not too complicated and improved the range significantly.

Hmm, that's kinda funny because I never thought of it being an issue. I really did think that maybe it was a 'safety'-issue-P-design so you had to be near the car and nobody could jack ya unexpectedly, lol. Well, it doesn't bother me, ok sometimes it does when I take an extra step too far away and can't lock it but I'll deal with it.

Cool Remote battery

I have had issues with my key remote on my 996 for years. It would just stop working, the dealer would say it was the battery but a few weeks later it would stop unlocking the car again.
Today I put a new Duracell 2032 in, after cleaning off the bitter coating with rubbing alcohol. ( learned that from my AirTag issue with that coating )
So far it works better…
