996 Rear Axle Shafts
Can both sides of the 996 axle shaft be rebuilt? The tranny side CV joint can be purchased. Is there anything that can be replaced on the wheel side? If not, when purchasing rebuilt axle shafts what is done with the wheel side joint? Vertex Auto in Miami sells rebuilt axles and will rebuild mine. That's why I'm wondering if anything can be done on the wheel side, other than re-greasing. Thank you

Yes the axle CV joints can be rebuilt . A " good " rebuilder will have the parts available to do so . We have a local rebuilder that I visited about two years ago . His comments have stuck with me . He said sourcing top quality rubber boots was a struggle and that most aftermarket axles were junk .
This is a shop that rebuilds LOTS of axles for street cars , race cars , drag cars and have a great reputation . It's all they do . He said he turns down so much work because of Chinese junk that he can't get parts for . Stay OEM whenever possible .
