Default Final drive ratio

Has anyone tried changing the final drive ratio from 3.44 to 3.68 or higher? Is the entire differential from the 99 Tip interchangeable with the 99 6-speed?

18-year old question and I can't find anything definitive (despite searching). Much appreciation to anyone who could provide an answer...

Two 100% completetly different transmisions. No parts can be swapped between a tip and a 6 sp manual.

there may be different gear sets available for each trans but may cost $15-25k for rebuilds.

That's a shame. It would've been nice to be at to use the 3.67 ring & pinion from the Tip on a 6-speed tranny.

Regardless, I appreciate the help info, De Jeeper. Thanks! 🍻

You can get a 3.00, 3.77, or 4.00 ring and pinion from here:

Why would you want a higher final drive ratio in the 996, i.e. 3.77 or 4? Serious question.

Thanks, TexSquirrel. I'm aware of the GBox option but I'm always looking to upgrade yet not spend more than I need to. Appreciate the tip though! 🍻

Factory 3.44 = 185mph@7200rpm theoretical

3.77 or 4.00 = Faster acceleration, lower top speed. 169mph/159mph@7200rpm theoretical

3.00 = slower acceleration, higher top speed. (I'm considering this for my 996.2 for the Texas Mile)
With enough HP to overcome drag, this choice theoretically gets you 212mph (341km/h) @ 7200rpm.
I don't believe the stock M96.03 would have enough HP to hit 212mph, much less in 5200 feet.(1609 meters)
In "just" 5200 feet you're lucky to hit 150mph.
If I eventually take my 996.2 with the FSI Track Performer Stage 2 4.0L engine to the Texas Mile and I run out of gearing, then I'll consider building a second transaxle with the 3.00 ring and pinion for a subsequent event.
I'll stick with the factory 3.44 ring and pinion for street/track/autoX.

Ah, makes sense. The Albins route is definitely NOT cheap!
