hello everyone I have a 2003 Porsche 996 and I'm having an issue with a small leak on transmission. I took it into the shop and was told it is a shift shaft seal leak and in order to get this seal fixed, you have to drop the transmission. So I'm looking to see if this is accurate for a seal? doesn't seem right. But can't seem to find anything when I search shift shaft seal.
You will have to drop the transmission and disassemble the transmission to get the shift fork seal. The seal is like $5. A transmission shop will charge about 4 hours labor to replace the seal, once the transmission is removed. Check to see if your transmission fluid is overfilled, as this would cause the seal to slightly leak.
The challenge is that the selector lever is retained inside the gear housing with a "lock piece," which has to be popped off to remove the selector lever and get to the radial oil seal. I don't think it's a four-hour job with the transmission on the bench. I might be overlooking something, but it's mostly a matter of removing the 13(?) bolts securing the gear housing to the differential carrier, then fidgeting with the gear housing to get it off. Remove the screw plug with the spring-loaded bushing, pop off the lock piece, you're in. Replace the seal, reassemble, fiddle the gear housing back on with fresh sealant.
