Porsche’s Deadly Sin #1: 1999 Porsche 911
Ran across this old opinion article that I found interesting.
It really sums up the hatred of the 996 from 11 years ago that continues today.

So while I can’t afford to indulge in the cars of my youth in the 80’s, this isn’t too bad and likely a better performer in most cases. I agree the styling of more recent 911’s has improved, I can’t afford those either. This is growing on me and it is what it is. I’m also enjoying the forums and social aspect of this, especially during COVID-19.

I think the lack of investigation for this article show in its content more negative info the better for me to find more deals because this probably the best value 911 you can buy today
I think that for performance and parts availability put a jack raby motor in or equivalent plus suspension kit and be on your way to years of enjoyment

I understand criticism of the headlights and IMS issues, but I don’t understand many of the other criticisms.
I prefer the interior aesthetics of the 996 to previous 911s. I had a 1986 944, which I suppose was built in an era of “superior” build quality, but the interior was far worse than the 996 in quality and durability. At the time I owned it, it was about as old as my 996 is now and it was completely falling apart…
It also had a rubber timing belt that needed to be replaced every 3 years, which was a $2-3000 service. That’s much worse and more irritating than the IMS issue, in my opinion.

I'm obviously a sucker for great cars that nobody likes (I previously owned an RX-8). I'm so thankful for the misplaced hate for the 996 because it has allowed me to own this dream car at a bargain price. But it's not the car for the casual buyer, or someone who can't afford unexpected four-figure cash outlays. (Indeed, no Porsche is).

That’s how I got 2 of my current cars CHEAP!!! My 88 e30 m3 and my 88 944 Turbo S 3500 and 2800 because they were old and stick shift lol

I love mine and so many people comment on it now. Perception of things changes over time. Plus its amazing to drive with the right suspension and exhaust mods. So much fun.

When I first got into the Porsche game in the early 2000's, I remember all the talking heads saying the same things about the Mid Years and SC. Don't buy bad don't buy don't buy.
Then the 964 went through the same cycle of abuse around the time I was buying mine.
Didn't take long to figure out that some of the best cars were the models the "purists" hated.

Fast forward to now, and I can't get out of the gas station fast enough because I have dudes coming over to ask about the car. It is also finally making pedestrians shoot their head around to watch and listen. As we progress into a future of electric cars and sharp edged designs with fake vents and exhaust pipes (i.e. the current Camry) making fake engine notes (BMW), these cars represent simpler times to enthusiasts. I am sure the young ones are just trying to figure out what it is and what decade it comes from.

It that the new 911?
How old it is?....really!?!
I love your car.
Nice car.
Nice Porsche.
I hear all of those often!
Back in June 2018, during the 70 year celebration, a nice lady in her 70s stopped at the dealership to look at Porsches while the local PCA club was there.
When I was getting into my car to leave, she came up to me and told me she liked my car.
She told me when she was talking to the sales person she had told him she was interested in buying mine, which was parked near a brand new 911.
She told him she preferred the looks of my car to the ones he had shown her. (This was pre-rollbar and taco spoiler. Taco was installed the next month)
The sales person told her mine was an older model and that it was privately owned.
We talked for quite a while, with the sales person listening from a distance.
She was asking how I liked my 911, what I thought about owning/driving it.
In the end, she decided she would buy the white 911 next to mine.
No, I didn't get a commission.
She wanted my Seal Grey 996 with headlight covers, but had to settle for the white one next to it she had just finished test driving.
