Default Panorama April 2021 - Safari 996's

For those of you who are a PCA member and get the Panorama, isn't that a cool back story - a pair of 996 Carrera dubbed Max and Petunia. Built for off roading and fording streams. "The safari 996 craze takes off..." Also, Ocean Jade Metallic and Arena Red. Beautiful cars.

I guess I need to take my Panorama out of the wrapper.

As I read I kept wondering who bought those two cars. I know they said it seems one has disappeared but the other one is out there somewhere. You would think PCNA could track that car down. I couldn't help but notice how much the early Cayennes really do look like a jacked up 996 from the front. I guess the nickname given to the Cayenne is appropriate.

That looks like part of the Mojave Trail which I've driven the entire 147 mi dirt trail in my 80 Series Land Cruiser.

How they increase the ride height without getting goofy driveline angles? I see the taller tires.

They had 70mm spacers on the top of the strut mounts and a 10mm spacer between the lower spring and strut. They also had 40mm spacers between the body and front subframe and 30mm spacers between the body and rear subframe They felt that the amount they lifted the car was the limit they could go without messing up the driveline angles.

They also state that they ran 225/50/17(25.9" Diameter) and 255/50/17(27.1" Diameter) tires on the car. Factory would have been 205/50/17(25.1" diameter) and 255/40/17(25" Diameter). I find that interesting because the rear tires have a much larger diameter from the front and everything I have read about the AWD system has been that the fronts should be taller for the AWD to work.

The CV axle angle is all screwed up but they weren't going at highway speeds so it didn't chew itself apart.

Thing I find interesting in that article is they keep calling the cars "C4S". As they were 1999 cars pretty sure they weren't C4S as records show the C4S for 996 cars were introduced in 2001.

I was fortunate enough to be the route guide for both this trip and the Cayenne press introduction trip that went up Clark's Grade in Big Bear California and also across parts of the Mojave Road. Unfortunately, I didn't keep much memorabilia from those events but I do have some shots of Petunia on the Mojave Road. Have done Google searches over the years but nothing ever really turned up. Was pleasantly surprised to find out there was a 20 year anniversary article in Panorama. If anyone else was connected with this event I would love to swap stories.
