Default Misfires, now won't start, HELP!

2003 C2
Purchased car in November 20 with 48k miles. Now has 52k. Posted before about my P300, P301, P302 and P303 misfires only on startup. Happened about one in ten or twenty starts. Took advice from the forum and just got my Durametric. Last night for the first time ever engine lugging when accelerating. Ran fine at cruise. Pulled over and restarted and drove fine 25 miles home. Hooked up Durametric (see photo) when got home.

This morning hooked up Durametric and started. Saw immediate misfires on cylinders 1, 2 and 3. Ran fine for half a mile and start lugging. I had my laptop on the passenger seat with Durametric running checking misfires on all cylinders. Misfires on other bank for the first time. Pulled over. Cranks but won't start. Not even firing.

Scary part. I posted a few weeks ago about my water pump replacement saga that just turned out to be a hose on the front of the engine. Know coolant was full after that work because went through cycles and checked for several days later. Coolant this morning was about an inch under minimum mark. Topped off.

I say one bank is done and you need to find out why. Remove and inspect the plugs. Is there cam deviation on bank 1?

I'll check the cam deviation. Just learning the Durametric. Would problems on one bank cause misfires on the other bank?

Pull the easiest spark plug from 1-3 and check the gap.

Maybe the bank 1 cam sensor or a ground issue.

Something similar happened to me in a 997. Air pocket was left after coolant change and eventually led to cracked cylinder after many many heat cycles. Got misfires at first, then eventually hydrolocked. Hope you arent facing the same fate. Best of luck.

Misfires on cylinders 1, 2, 3 were going on long before the coolant change, so hopefully not that. But, that does not explain the misfires on the other bank. Coolant not completely drained when changed water pump and I followed the rev up / fans on procedure religiously. Will coolant from a cracked head show up when I pull a plug or with a bore scope? I had a 740iL with a cracked head and oil got milky/frothy. Oil in the 996 looks fine.

I’m not qualified to answer that. I had my car flat bedded to my indy and i believe he saw coolant in a cylinder when he removed the plugs. Again that wasnt a M96 engine so hopefully your situation is different from mine.

As I wrote before, just pull the plug and go from there.

Your model year has Vario cam plus. If I had to guess your lifters are failing.
You will need to check the compression. Or perform leak down test to verify.

Default Update

This is the hose that was replaced a few weeks ago after first replaced water pump before figured out this was the leak.

Got underneath to pull the plugs and saw:

No drips, but wet. Has been sitting since Thursday morning

Coil cylinder 3 - definite drip I know this wasn't there when replaced water pump

Variocam? by cylinder 3 - definite drip I know this wasn't there when replaced water pump

Definite drip

No drips, could be left over from prior leak

Coil cylinder 1 - definite drip I know this wasn't there when replaced water pump

Driver's side back of engine were mates to transaxle

Above driver's side bank. Wet.

After replaced the water pump, I pressure tested the system. No pressure drop. As said, the coolant tank is new (still nice and white).

Ideas?

Is the air/oil separator water cooled?

Check all the clamps on the coolant hoses/lines - there are a lot of them and they generally only leak when the car is hot (full pressure). It could also be the tank - even though it was replaced recently... Once you figure out the leak, replace your coils to see if the misfires go away.

Heading out to get coolant pressure tester rental tool. Figure I'll pump up and lay under the engine to try to spot the leak.

You mean reinstall coils or get new ones?
