Default Pricing for 2001 Turbo

I'd like to get a few opinions on pricing. A guy I know is offering his 2001 Turbo to me for $38,000 and I feel like this is one of the "too good to be true" deals but want to get a few opinions.

The car is a 6 speed coupe, black on black, has 60k miles, sunroof, heated seats, kline (?) exhaust, and a tune from EPL.

It appears from a reasonable amount of research to be extremely well taken care of and the paint is almost mint. Interior isn't perfect, some creases in the leather, but that's it.

I'd definitely have the car go through a PPI before purchasing but for the moment assume it's in great condition.

From what I can see the car is worth more like $47-53k. Is that right? Am I taking crazy pills and talking myself out of an incredible deal?

Ayup, that's a really good price if it's as you describe.

Seems on the low end but not insanely low. It could easily need $5k or more in deferred maintenance, almost every 20 yr old 996 being sold probably does. Pricing used Porsches isn’t a science, lots of folks here post about great buys while others admit to overpaying. Get a thorough PPI and maybe you join the “great buy” group.

If a PPI checks out then go for it, seems like a good deal.

Sounds like a good price to me...depending upon condition.
I passed up a 996 turbo back in 2017 for $34K that had 125K miles.
It looked in a lot rougher condition than my 996.2 C2 with 50K miles, so I bought my C2 instead.
I also ended up with an extra $14K for maintenance and mods.

Yeah, that's 5k below market at minimum. I would pursue that.

If the car is clean without major accident history and reasonable maintenance history, I would call that a very good deal.

As mentioned previously, these cars are 20 years old and even the most well maintained car will probably have a thing or two pop up in the near future. The good news is, the Turbo cars aren't that much harder to work on than the Carreras (though the engine bay is a bit more cramped) and most of the old-age related issues on these are DIY items.

I always check out BAT to get an idea what these cars are going for. Especially well cared for low mileage motors... https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...911-turbo-108/

If it's a "good" car, it's a "great" price!

Best price I've seen in my general area in the past 6 months was $39.8k for a 2002 TT w/100k miles and a Tip Trans. I would have bought it if it had a MT but I really don't want an AT.

I don't need/want another BLACK car but if your car was in my area, I'd probably jump on it w/o a PPI (which I have never done on any of the over 100 vehicles that I've ever owned, including the 2000 C4 Cab that I currently own) as long as the car checks out visually and on the test drive and the seller has service records and the CarFax info looks ok.

So, don't tell me where it is or I might buy it out from under you w/cash in hand.

LOL!

I wouldn't bother with a PPI on a Turbo either. I didn't bother on either of the two Turbos I have and a PPI would not have spotted anything anyway.
If it drives smoothly, boosts to 0.8 bar, and looks OK I'd buy it.

It turned out pretty solid from the PPI today. It needs an alignment and brake rotors, that's about it for the immediate issues.

Small trans leaks at pivot and vac pump on bank 2.

A few interior pieces are coming apart... dashboard starting to come up, sunroof trim is loose.

Rear spoiler motor starting to seep.

DME report shows some revs in range 2. I actually have the PPI that the current owner did 5 years ago and all range 1 and 2 over-revs were over 400 engine hours ago. None beyond that.

Still sounds like a good deal? I'm getting excited!

go for it!
I would put a paint meter on it and confirm original paint, even a couple fenders painted well is not big deal for that price.
oh did they check 2nd gear popout? can be very expensive. drive the car down a hill in second gear to test. also coolant pipes may need doing and expensive in some areas.
what are you planning to use this car for?
I would post on the 996turbo forum or do some research on the above items there.

Paint won't be original. The front bumper was resprayed and a paint correction done prior to a ceramic coat recently. An incident with a garage door crunched the roof a bit and was replaced.

They didn't mention 2nd gear popout, it's certainly possible they tested it and didn't mention doing so. It's apparently a very good porsche shop, super familiar with everything but good question nonetheless.

I asked about coolant pipes. It's unknown whether they've been done, of course the engine was out only a few years ago for a clutch and there's no record of it being done. I am not planning on doing any track stuff, the shop advised that I don't need to worry too much about the coolant pipes if that's the case.

if coolant pipes leak (happens quite often) you can't use your car. You could be stranded. Engine should come out to address it properly. It may happen when shops are busy and don't give you a break. Some shops in California charge 8k for this ($500/hour). it can easily be visually inspected. I would specifically ask about 2nd gear. to repair transmission out and rebuild. Don't let emotions decide for you. Good luck.
