I think in years ahead the 911 will be more desirable than the boxster. Resale will be better and it held up in a better regards. More power always helps too.
drive them back to back, most people can tell where the extra money went on a 996. the question should be: if there's no difference in price, why the boxster?
I just got out of my Boxster S at considerable expense (would have been much cheaper to wait another year or two) to get back into a 911. The Boxster is a fun car, but a 911 is a 911 and a Boxster is not. In addition, the 911 should hold its value better. Therefore, I would lean heavily to the 911.
I had the Boxster S and now I have a 911 cab. Honestly, they feel different. The best thing to do would be to try them both and see which one you like better...it's about you, not what the rest of the world think. Either way you'll be happy because both are that good.
I had the same dilemma 3 months ago. I chose the 911 coupe because of the power difference and because I think the 996 is one of the best looking models of the 911 produced. I also like the roomier cockpit.

I couldn't have said it better - After owning a 986S and then getting back into a 996 Targa - They are truly night and day, the communication with the 996 is better, Roomier, Aggressive looking, better exhaust notes, more power. I love the look of My 986S but I am in love with the look of my 996 Targa. They are both really fun cars to drive. It's all relative...
I owned a '99 Boxster for four year(pretty long for me!) and 951 at the same time. Went from there to an Audi TT. Thinking about what my next Porsche will be. I've always thought I wanted to try an aircooled. But, until I have time to tinker, I suspect I'd have to go with a 993 aircooled.(reliability). Heck, if I'm going that current, why not consider water. The Boxster has water, and I didn't have any trouble with the Boxster after they replaced the first engine As I began to think about the 996 alternatives, it occured to me that a Boxster S merits consideration.
Anyway, that's what brought me here. While I know it ultimately comes down to what I like, it's always helpfull to hear from owners. You could have all said the '99's were a terrible year, get a '2000. That kind of help will only be found here.
