'99 911 cab vs. '01 Boxster S
#18
I own both cars and those same years (01 Boxster S and 99 996 C4 Cab) , they both are awesome.
Oddly, the 01 Boxster S is a more fun ride because it's very tossable and feels faster to me, but I own both cars. The 99 996 C4 Cab feels like a more substantial car and carried more weight in social circles. The fact is that the market for both Boxster S and 996s stink right now and neither car is hold its value. With the 911 history, I'm sure that the 996 value will be more consistent than the Boxster.
Try them both out and see which is your preference.

I went from a 2000 Boxster S to my current 2004 911 coupe. They are both superb cars and you won't be disappointed with either one.
I personally prefer the mid-engine handling of the Boxster and I think it is the better looking car. However, I'm not a huge fan of convertibles (I got the Boxster purely due to it's mid-engine layout) so I finally decided to part with the Boxster and got the only coupe Porsche makes; a 911. I love it, although the tail end definitely moves a lot more than in the Boxster at higher speed corners but I'm getting used to it. The power is awesome and I always hated the fact that you can't get a Boxster with the same motor.
As far as where the money goes in a 911? In Porsche's pockets. Really, there is very little difference between equally equiped Boxsters and 911's. They cost Porsche almost the same amount to build yet the 911 has a huge premium on it compared to the Boxster, so it is pretty much profit in Porsche's bank account.
Given the year of Boxster that you are considering, I think it has already taken its biggest depreciation hit so you should be okay with either car in that regard.
For me, if they really do put a mid-engine coupe on the market with the same motor that is available in the 911, I will be switching to it; there is nothing like a mid-engined sports car

It's a shame Porsche didn't make a Boxster S coupe.
I agree that both are great cars.
Excluding the back seat and ability to push the seats further back, is the 911 cabin bigger? I didn't notice it when I drove them.

And to say the 996 has a back seat that counts for much is really stretching it. You put your clubs in through the side door and scratch your paint, I'll do it the "civilized" way.

I would have to disagree - my two kids fit just fine in the back seats - in a couple of years - yes I will have a problem, but there's always moms AMG....

Regarding the seats.
Depends on where you are in life.
The back seats are a waste as far as I'm concerned. I've never liked them, and never had a use for them.
That being said, they wouldn't be a factor in my decision either way.
I do like the trunk in the Boxster. Once again, not a decision maker.

Everybody has a boxster these days. They are everywhere on the road. Go with the 911. It definately has the "cool" factor. Nobody really respects the boxster. I had one for two years and most of my friends goofed on it and called it a "starter porsche". I've got a 996 cab now. Way nicer car. Looks better and is much faster. Go with the 996 and you won't be thinking about how soon you're gonna upgrade.
