Budget is around $40 to $45k which is strike range for a 02-04 C4S or a 06-08ish 997.1 either base or S models mileage dependent. I've always loved the C4S a lot and have previous experience in the 996 (an 03 Targa) but engine weaknesses are concerning a bit. Guys on the 997 board seem very anti-996 based on various posts which also have me thinking maybe 997. Tough decision based on similar pricing and the differences between the two.

Thoughts appreciated.

Drive them, then you’ll know. I’m a 4S er. I preferred the looks. Can’t go wrong with any of them.

The 997 range you are looking into has the same engine issue's .....
I would go for the one that makes you smile the most!

You could get a 996.1 C2, 2900lbs (lightest 911 over 3 decades) for $20-$25k and save the $20k for a future FSI engine rebuild. Same price in the end, and you might not need the rebuild.
