Default dash lights update

I took my 2004 turbo in for oil change at the dealership and asked about my dash lights going off after I turn on my lights after about 3-5 minutes of driving. The tech told me this is an age problem and the dash lights need to be replaced. The digital display works fine. They said the replacement of the lights would be about $3k. Does any of this make sense?
Thank you!!!

The first thing to do is replace your light switch and ignition switch. Since it is common to all gauge cluster lights I think it is the place to start. Your 2004, unlike earlier years, I believe uses LED lights in the gauge cluster, making repairs very expensive because they are not replaceable.. Shy of replacing the entire gauge cluster circuit board (which stores mileage btw) with a new one, maybe think about sending the cluster circuit board out for repair. VDO repair or Pedro's garage come to mind.

It seems to me that if the switches were bad, the lights would not come on at all.

The headlight switch is known to do such things. Intermittent failures are really common. Especally after that short time, the switch could be heating up and losing connection. Even the Porsche OEM switch is only like a hundred bucks and should only be an hour's labor to replace. Someone has found a Mercedes switch that is an equivalent and cheaper but I didntt save that info. The switch is not to bad to change if you DIY, there are several topics on the forum.
I believe that all Turbo instrument clusters use LED's for illumination, regardless of year.

so as a follow up I went and turned the lights on without starting the car. Lights in the dash came on and stayed on until I turned on the fog lights, pulled the sea;ector dial out. The dash lights went off and would not come back on. I think you are correct about the light switch. Any test for the ignition switch?

Not really but it's cheap and easy to change.
