i did a quick search but could not find my answer. With the t-day sales im buying a few things for my car and i will need some specialty tools. First i plan on replacing my rms. I know u can make a tool with pvc but i was hoping to find a reasonably priced accurate tool. I found this one but u have to hammer on the seal not pull it on with bolts. Not sure if this is an issue?
the next item is replacing a couple chains and a bunch of pads. I plan on doing the variocam pads and because its a 5 chain i think i have to pull the assembly. Even if i do not i have to lock the cams. Im not sure if i need cam hold downs too. Is there a resonable kit for this or a rental? There are some out of stock kits like this but this company shows having them in stock.
I tried the Cheetah online, I dont think the company is open anymore. SIR Tools makes a nice one but all the places that had it listed were out of stock. I found the one above on eBay that worked great. Its been 3 months and a little over 1K miles since I replaced with the newest Porsche brand seal and no leaks. The only problem was it took almost 2 weeks longer to receive than listed. My seal was leaking and obviously not installed evenly. I tried making a PVC one while waiting for the one eBay but didnt have any luck.
I purchased the LN Engineering IMS Pro tool kit. It has 2 cam locks, one for 5 chain and one for 3 chain. They are used externally. They are pretty simple you might be able to find them separately or even fabricate with a saw and grinder. I think the one you linked hold the cam when you take the heads off.

i figured u had some for rent. I tried to get the trans mount tool but it was already out.
gonna be at least a month at least before.i pull the motor but ill save your rental thread.
one additional question. Do u need the cam hold downs to change the variocam pads on a 5 chain? I know if u have pull them i may need left hand thread allthread to compress, just dont know if the valve cover has to come off too.
In 20 years of wrenching on Ferrari and Porsche, I have never needed a RMS installation tool. I use a hammer and a block of wood. Never a leak, ever.
The 996 crankshaft sticks out so you need something else than a 2x4. I used a peanut butter jar lid, drilled 4 holes and used the flywheel bolts to get the seal in the right place. Cost was $0 but took a little time to drill the 4 holes in the plastic lid.
As for the crankshaft locking tool, one small block chevy pushrod is an exact fit. I had one laying around but you can get one for free from any speed shop if you ask. To hold down the camshafts, I used some 3/4" hardwood pieces and drilled holes in them to hold the camshaft down and to lock them while removing the valve cover on a 5 chain engine, I made a contraption that works like the locking tool from thin angle iron and some bolts. So as you can see, if there is a will but don't want to spend money, there is a way! I used these tools twice to take my engine apart.

well i have very few records on my car but i can see that the rms as already done twice in the last 20k. I really want to see if i can get it square. It might just be a 200k miles it wont seal but i want to give it my best effort.
i was just hoping to find tools under $100 becsuse thats my mental breaking point for making something. I do have a mill and a lathe but im not all that great of a machinist and it will probably take a few hours for me yo make something. Has anyone found a dimensional drawings?
If you have access to a 3D printer, here's the STL file for RMS install tool I designed for my rebuild. Had to change the file extension to get to upload, so it needs to be changed from .txt back to .stl before opening.

Dude! Peanut butter jar lid with 4 holes is all you need. Use the flywheel as a guide to get the holes where they need to be.

but the wife would be pissed about the open jar
I can pick up a raw round hdpe cut off for a couple bucks at a local supply and practice my machining
i may buy this. Its priced right but looks like it ships from over the pond. Luckily i have some time if i have to wait for it.
I have a cam lock set you can borrow if needed. Just pay shipping and a deposit for the cost of the tool. I also have an RMS tool.
thx but im betting its cheaper to buy the tools then ship from u .
actually i did buy the 9products cam lock. It was $75 shipped from finland, i also bought a cheap cam hold down kit. I guess i really like owning my own tools. For the rms im gonna make one. It will be easy enough on the lathe or from a peanut butter jar lid.
