I know it's expensive people, but Porsche really hit a homerun with this unit. Perfect for those who want Apple Carplay with a factory design that complements all the 996 and 986 cars. Now, let's hope they do the same for the 997 and 987 cars.

Does this unit have a back-up camera?
How are the maps updated?

Does anyone know what extra parts required for a non-PCM installation, meaning no existing factory PCM?

I was told the following parts are required:

1 ea 996 552 339 00 01C (use your trim color code - 01C is satin black) A/C Panel Trim
1 ea
996 552 231 12 01C (use your trim color code - 01C is satin black) Support Frame
1 ea 996 552 653 02 Retaining Bracket

Also, where do you install the GPS antenna? There are no instructions in the kit for installation, and the dealer said I would have to speak to the service department, ya right!

If I can’t get the installation instructions, this will be a hard pass for me. Dealer wants $1500 labor to install for a 3 hour job. lol

I’ll post installation photos once we get the first unit in...we have the car, 2005 GT3, but units arrive in October

Our installation will also be offered in a more OEM-style application with custom usb/gps/mic locations that are much more seamless than what manufacturer recommends

stay tuned

great video

makes a good point about the cost is balanced by also adding value to the car since it’s a Porsche-stamped part and not aftermarket

if it had wireless carplay I'd have one on order. every aftermarket company has brought a unit to market w this feature

bizarre that at this price point you have to plug your phone in. in my neck of the woods having a phone visible anywhere within reach of the driver is a potential ticket.

If I was to fit this to my car I would route all the wiring to the cubby behind the hand brake. This way the phone and cables are neatly hidden away.

Indeed. Beats me why they didn't go for wireless connection. In all promo material the interface is placed in the middle of the empty slot under the unit. Might look a bit better but useless, phone has to go on the passenger seat with wires everywhere etc.

The armrest storage area is definitely the best place for it

I like the look and the idea that it’s purpose made for the car so the likelihood of install issues probably aren’t there. New tunes aren’t in the budget for this year and I’d like to see more installs before I go this route. Prefer to do the work myself. I’m used to a cable connected to my phone for tunes. I listen to Pandora through an adapter in the work van. I’m probably about a decade behind on this stuff but it works. I’m far more confident with a wrench than tech stuff. While I agree the little box in the cubby looks like an afterthought I can live with it and I’d definitely do as the guy in the video and set it to one side so the phone fits.

I find these style of displays are mounted too low on the dash to be useful. I mount my phone high up so I can see what is playing or directions while still seeing ahead of me. Every time I have to look down at the dash is a moment I am not paying attention to the road.

In late 2014, I ordered a 2015 Jeep Wrangler. GPS/Audio (makes your ears bleed btw) was a $2200 option. No carplay available. At the time I was a blackberry user. By 2016, we had gone to iPhones and with Waze for traffic, I no longer use the car GPS.

As much as I look the look and dedication from Porsche for the 996, I feel that this will just not age well, whereas the factory becker will just look vintage in 10 years. One of the reasons I didn't buy a 997 was because of the ugly, dated interior. The GPS was dated when the 997 came out lol.
