Default Who broke their wheel lock key recently?

I tried to find it in the "what did you do to your 996 today?" thread. Anyway, I realize I have that same key but it does not match my wheel locks.

If you see this, or if someone can pass this on - it's yours for the cost of shipping. It's the upper one in this photo.

Good on ya Scott! I recently did worse, lost the key to my e46. I’ve managed to keep up with it for 13 years but been super busy with a bunch of projects. Luckily, I found the manufacturer and they were able to send me a replacement but was scary for a sec... hope your post can help someone out.

Why do people even bother with wheel locks anymore?

Many years ago, doing a tire rotation on my trusty 4runner, wheel lock nut broke. 2 hours carefully chiseling the remnant of the nut. Any car owned since then, I've removed the wheel locks as they are more trouble than they are worth IMHO.

If they are going to take the rims/car, that's what insurance is for....

My question is who parks their 911 on the street or anywhere where wheel locks "might" be necessary anymore?

The aftermarket wheels on my 996 came w/wheel locks on them but there was no key in sight in the car. I had to look all over for a key that would fit. Fortunately found one that fit and got rid of the locks and replaced them w/a lug nut ASAP.

I always park it in the garage and never leave it for more than 1 hr on the street. So, I really don't need them.

That would have been my post. I managed to get a new one but ended up having to get some help from one of the techs at my dealer because it was sooo tight that it broke my NEW key. Glad to say they are no longer the car anymore

Stand-up offer Scott !! The only thing is it has a 1 in 50 chance in replacing his wheel lock socket. There is a number on the socket, and there are 50 different versions. The Dealerships have a "master set" with all 50 versions in it that can identify the number if the socket is lost.

So you need to check the number on your socket, and if it matches the number on his busted one, good-to-go..

^^^ True, I have seen some that I couldn't find a number on, and some that the number was just barely readable. The "Master Set" and all new ones are clearly numbered..

I removed mine when I installed my stud kit.
I don't know why people wouldn't get rid of their lug bolts and wheels hangers.
My Mustang still has them.
Unfortunately there were just 3 spare lug nuts in the trunk when I bought it.
I need to get a 4th, and a spare and get rid of the locks on it.

I couldn't recall who it was. Glad you got it worked out. The photo you posted looked like the same key that I have no use for.

I totally agree with the comments regarding getting rid of the locking bolts and installing standard wheel bolts (or studs). The lock/key set I have is actually pretty good. If I fix everything else, I might get around to addressing this.

Which of the two are you getting rid of? I just snapped the tool for my 99 996.

Having some difficulty in finding a replacement as my tool has six inner teeth equally spaced around the circumference. Most I see have six inner teeth, but not equally spaced.

That looks similar to the one I have. Can you tell if it matches what you have?

When I took my Porsche to the dealership, it was my understanding that Porsche moved away from this style of wheel lock lugs because the key lugs were known to crack under heavy torque. The new ones have many splines in the design. I've chosen to not use them either way. Seems like I've read where people experience dead batteries on trips and they couldn't get into the frunk. Then, they couldn't find their wheel lock key to remove the front wheel to access the frunk release cable. Talk about frustrating.

I just got tired of the whole thing after breaking mine and broke down and spent over fifty bucks and ordered a 1/2 inch drive damaged wheel lock removal twist set from Texas tire and removed them from all my vehicles. It just seems that rummaging around looking for the lock and then having it break once again while I am on some back road would not be in my best interest.
