you have to drop the motor it is doubtful you would want to try and do it yourself. I wanted to do the same but then learned that, that's why the dealer gets 1k for the labor

i had the clutch replaced in my 99 and it was only 1100 total parts and labor

I'm not sure but I think I saw an excellence article on clutch replacement on a boxster. I would imagine a 996 would be similar procedure. Also ask Loren forum this question, someone might have better answers.

The article was in the Excellence for September of 2003. It started on page 153. It was a DIY for the Boxster clutch replacement. This is just an educated guess, but the 996 clutch replacement shouldn't be much different. If you don't have the mag, you can purchase back-issues from them or maybe you have a friend who subscribes.
