Quick background: I got my car (‘02 coupe, manual) with 21k miles last April. A PPI was done at a Porsche dealer who noted the car was in good mechanical shape but had some issues. One of them was that the speedometer needle did not work, but I bought the car anyway.
in October, I left the car out overnight when it dropped below freezing and then the speedometer needle started working again. That is, until February where I once again left the car out in some pretty cold weather only for the needle to stop working. Last week I left the car outside on a warm day (relative for here in Boston) and it started working again. However, leaving it in the garage overnight seems to remove the needle’s desire to work and I’m back at no function.
I have done some research (thanks to everyone on this forum, by the way; you guys are an incredible resource) and know that I can buy a used cluster and either make a note of the mileage discrepancy or have a company reset it to match mine. I am hesitant to do this as it could complicate things down the road should I ever part with the car, not to mention engine rev data/etc are saved on the cluster in addition to mileage and I think that is valuable information to have handy.
So, tonight, I pulled the cluster from the car and started taking it apart to see if I could find a ground or mating issue with the servo motor for the needle. I got to a point where I no longer felt comfortable pulling apart the circuit boards as I didn’t want to break it while looking around. I did a quick lap of the neighborhood to make sure everything else still worked (which it does, thankfully, except the trip odometer reset) but still no speedo needle. When I put the car in accessory, the needle moves slightly down to below 0 and then back to 0 so I think there must be some electrical connection that is subject to thermal shock and has a mind of its own. Ultimately I have the digital speed and the tach is in the center for a reason, but it would be nice to have this addressed at some point. I’ll add some pictures of how far I got taking things apart. Any advice going forward? There’s nothing wrong with how the car drives and I have no plans to sell it. Thanks, y’all!
As long as you properly document the before and after, replacing the cluster or speedo should not affect your car’s value if you sell it down the road. I would take pictures and/or video before, during, after.
The same applies to paint repair, and any other parts swapping procedures where folks might want the original parts put back on the car (assuming said folks have those parts).
So if it bothers you, and it would bother me too, I’d replace the speedo.
Thanks for the advice, Mike. I ordered a new to me instrument cluster from LA Dismantler this afternoon and will keep good records for if they are ever needed down the line.
